About this winery

Domaine Simon Bize et Fils is a truly classic Burgundian family domain: not large (22 hectares, with small plots spread across many appellations), but not too small, with production of about 7,000 cases per year; resolutely old-fashioned (wines typically feature 100% stem inclusion and discrete use of oak), and committed to making age-worthy wines from low-yielding old vines. Product notes

The story begins in 1880 in Savigny les Beaune, since then generations have succeeded, each bringing their work and their knowledge to the Domaine.
The wines from this area are from vineyards covering 22 hectares, a considerable area in Burgundy. Great tension and concentration in red and white.
The vines were planted between 1965 and 1978.
The soil is moderately deep, white earth clay and limestone.

Production notes

The age of the barrel varies from 1 to 6 years to preserve the Pinot Noir's delicate and typical aromas.

Tasting notes

Extraordinary aftertaste.

Julia Harding, January 2015

Light to mid crimson. Aromatic with sweet spice as well as sweet peppery red fruit. Then more savoury on the palate, darker fruit, polished tannins, scented more than intense on the palate but the fruit persists really well on the fresh finish. I'd enjoy this on the fruit rather than waiting for greater complexity.

January 2018 (Vintage 2016)

Bottled. Mid crimson. Both sweet fruited and a little stemmy – an attractive combination. Equally attractive on the palate, that stemmy/herbal character really adding freshness. Dry, grainy tannins add further to the energy and liveliness.
