Spy Valley Wines is one of Marlborough’s few remaining 100% Kiwi family-owned wine companies, owned and operated by the Johnson family since 1990. The winery is located up the road from a Five Eyes Spy base and is known as one of New Zealand’s most acclaimed producers. Product notes
Waihopai Valley - alluvial stony silt loams,very well drained, and clay/loess over gravel. Wairau Valley – shallow depth of stony silt loams over gravel, very well drained.
Production notes
Harvested over 5 separate picks, with 4 by hand, the grapes were gently pressed with the juice left to settle clear before fermentation. A mix of old oak barriques, a large oak cask, and stainless steel tanks were used to ferment the separate blocks. A small percentage of Malbec and Syrah was included in the blend, with bottling 3 months after harvest.
Tasting notes
Aromas of vibrant red berry fruits with a distinct stone fruit layer. Delicate notes of rose petal, cinnamon and cracked pepper. Mouth filling and dry, with an energetic acid balance. Peach and nectarine flavours with classic cherry and strawberry notes.
