Oldfield Reserve Cabernet Franc 2016

- 90 points -

My first look at this Oldfield Reserve Cab Franc and it's impressive. 2016 was an excellent vintage until an early frost on October 13 and 14, followed by rain, which made picking difficult. Two ferments, selected yeast and natural ferment, and ageing in French oak (35% new) for a year prior to a selection for the reserve, followed by a return to barrel for a further six months. I love the intense, deep freshly baked cherry, plum pie that tumbles onto the palate in soft textures and baking spices. The final blend is an 88/11/1/ mix of cabernet franc, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Bottled under screwcap, this will be fun to drink and watch over the next decade.
