Ils...

Novembre 2022 (Millésime 2019)

The incredibly subtle, elegant and austere 2019 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard reminds me of a great vintage of Lafleur, my favorite Bordeaux, as this is one of the finest vintages for this single-vineyard blend of Cabernet Franc with some 15% Malbec. It develops very slowly in the glass and shows layers and layers of aromas but all in a very subtle way. It also reminds me of the fabulous 2013 that I rated 100 points in 2018, and there has not been such a perfect vintage since then. It has great balance and a silky mouthfeel, with refined, elegant tannins and a long, dry finish with a chalky and salty sensation and no room for sweetness; it's more about herbs, flowers and rocks than anything else. They produced 9,000 bottles of this beauty. It was bottled in July 2020.

Novembre 2023 (Millésime 2019)

A complex, restrained and deliciously austere cabernet franc with damp earth, oyster shells, blueberries, thyme, rosemary and mushrooms. Super serious and chalky on the palate with lots of dissolved, minerally-textured tannins. Very long and uncompromising! An incredible cabernet franc from Gualtallary by Alejandro Vigil. Extremely pure, mineral and seductive. A fabulous cabernet franc that grows on the palate with remarkable tension and texture.

Luis Gutiérrez, Novembre 2022 (Millésime 2020)

The 2020 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard is nothing but phenomenal. It's very fresh and balanced and, for a warm year like 2020, doesn't show any heat or excess; it's subtle and has an ethereal character within the powerful and exuberant character from Gualtallary. It fermented in concrete with indigenous yeasts and some full clusters, sometimes up to 70% of the volume. It's intense and powerful, but something makes if feel light on its feet and with great inner power. This is still young and should develop nicely in bottle and for a long time. 9,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2021 after maturing in large oak foudres for 15 months.

Mai 2025 (Millésime 2021)

As difficult as it is to pick a winner between the Gualtallary and El Cepillo bottlings, the 2021 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard gets my nod as the supreme example of the Gran Enemigo Single Vineyard Cabernet Francs. It hails from a plot planted on calcareous rocky soils in 1995 with 10,000 vines per hectare, fermented with 40% whole bunches in barrique and underwent a 15-month élevage in 100-year-old foudre. Opening with a brooding, inward and quietly perfumed nose, its aromatic profile ceaselessly expands to encompass all manner of herbal and floral complexity, combining simmering intensity with supreme elegance. The palate follows suit with a rich, silky, refined and gently succulent energy, releasing into a graceful, dense and glacial conclusion that gives equal measure to vertical energy and horizontal richness. The finish slowly but steadily builds upon itself, revealing shimmering acidity and ultra-refined tannins with increased aeration. There is no better example of Cabernet Franc's suitability in the Uco Valley, a match rendered here with incomparable finesse, depth and complexity.

Novembre 2022 (Millésime 2018)

One of the finest and more regular wines from Argentina, the 2018 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary Single Vineyard is austere and shows restraint, with great freshness and gobsmacking balance and complexity, but in the context of the 2019 and 2020 vintages that I also tasted next to it, it comes thorough as slightly less refined but still with 13.5% alcohol and with very good parameters of acidity and freshness. It has a medium-bodied palate and a rare combination of power and elegance, with very fine, chalky tannins. It's very long and has a salty and tasty finish.

Novembre 2024 (Millésime 2021)

Is it possible to create a wine with structure but without weight? The 2021 Cabernet Franc Gran Enemigo Gualtallary offers a remarkable answer to that apparent paradox, finding the solution in a balanced combination of terroir and careful cellar work. It's almost utopian—a mountain wine with the structure and character of high-altitude vineyards, yet with the agility and freshness of an oceanic red. Purple in hue, it opens with blackberry and plum, layered with mountain herbs, a hint of sour cherry, cassis and floral tones of violet and lavender. Dry and juicy, with a slightly compact feel, the wine glides across the palate with weightless grace, supported by fine, chalky tannins. This wine is a triumph.

Février 2024 (Millésime 2020)

Ink and licorice with blackberry and black olive aromas. Medium- to full-bodied with round, fine tannins that are crunchy and refined. It has a juicy undertone and a savory finish. Just a hint of cedar and caramel at the end.

Décembre 2021 (Millésime 2018)

A savage example of Gualtallary, nearly 1,500 meters up in the northern Uco Valley. This is rich in herbal tones, as is dictated by the dominant variety (cabernet franc), especially if you consider that at this altitude, with the cool Andean conditions, that side is exacerbated. This is a perfumed and juicy red with savage tannins, as is usual in this zone, and the acidity corresponds to a mountain wine. This is 85% cabernet franc, and the rest is malbec, all aged in foudres for 15 months.

Juin 2022 (Millésime 2018)

The richest, darkest and most profound of the Gran Enemigo blends, this classic assemblage of Cabernet Franc and 15% Malbec is inky, intense and alluringly scented, with subtle wood, blackberry, black olive and wild thyme flavours and racy, chalky acidity.

Novembre 2024 (Millésime 2020)

The 2020 Cabernet Franc Gran Enemigo Gualtallary hails from the higher-altitude regions of the Uco Valley. Despite being produced in a warm year, this wine maintains a juicy essence, although it lacks depth. It opens with an intense bouquet of grapefruit, violet and wild herbs. Natural fruit flavors emerge on the palate, highlighted by blackberry hints and a chalky texture, culminating in a long, fruit-driven finish. This wine is vertical, showcasing slightly riper fruit nuances. It’s interesting how a region like Gualtallary can shift its profile between warm and cool years, emphasizing the extremes.

2024 (Millésime 2021)

Fermented with 100% whole bunches, this blend of Cabernet Franc and 15% Malbec hails from vineyards in Gualtallary at 1,470 metres. Curated in foudres and concrete vats, it has classic garrigue and jarilla top notes, impressive structure and acidity, savoury tannins, blackberry and green herb flavours and a chalky finish.

Blue fruit with blackberries, violets, white roses and a touch of curry. Medium-bodied with fine tannins. Rather reserved on the palate with a brightness.

Février 2025 (Millésime 2020)

Fresh rosemary, graphite and tobacco accents meld with an elegant, orange peel–accented raspberry and plum core that reveals cocoa nib details while unfurling around a nice lift of fresh acidity, driving the flavors onto the finish around structured tannins.
