A giant malbec capable of owning the Argentino moniker, this is all old vines from Catena’s Nicasia and Angelica vineyards, with origins reaching back to pre-phylloxera, mother, or ‘Catena’ cuttings from more than one hundred years ago. It begins with 20 percent whole cluster fruit and 80 percent whole berries going directly into 225-500-liter new French oak to ferment for 30 days and then age for 18 months. I love this cool vintage which really helps to express the moody, deep, malbec. The palate is dense with plush tannins, and chiseled, stony, sweet black fruit loaded with texture and length. It’s bottle unfined and unfiltered, but it’s all finesse in 2015. Cellar this for a decade if you have the patience.
