The name pays homage to shepherds’ canines that once roamed this district of Marlborough, N.Z., herding sheep before proper fences could be erected. You’ll still find a gentle dog or two on the property if you visit, but they’re kept around for company, not work. Animals aside, it’s one of the best grape-growing properties in New Zealand. The 2013 sauvignon blanc is top class, with a subtler profile compared with most of its Kiwi kin. Light-bodied and crisp, it plays a mind game – silky first, then zesty, then silky again. All the way through you may detect a note of flintiness along with the herb-garden and citrus-orchard characters. Classy fare for grilled, citrus-marinated shellfish.
