About this winery

Ashbourne is a small Pinotage, Pinotage blend and Sauvignon blanc blend specialist, founded in 1996 by Anthony Hamilton Russell and located on a beautiful 64 hectare property in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley on the eastern border of Hamilton Russell Vineyards. Ashbourne’s primary aim is for its founding wine - the Ashbourne Pinotage (maiden vintage 2001) to belong firmly in the company of the world’s great benchmarks, without in any way replicating them or seeking to taste like them. Notes about product

A warmer than average February, combined with the very low yields and small berries did however contribute to the riper more opulent style of 2018. One of the features of 2018 was fairly variable ripening within individual vineyards, and within individual bunches. Picking on taste, combined with analysis, and picking particular areas within individual vineyards at different times, was particularly important in 2018. This required a high level of vigilance and very close teamwork between cellar and vineyard, both of which were carried out with great success. 2018 was an excellent vintage.

Tasting notes

Fresh, vibrant, perfumed Sauvignon blanc, filled-out and enriched with a carefully judged unwooded Chardonnay component, make this a beautifully balanced and highly versatile wine. More than two decades of family experience have gone into this unique blend.

August 2018

There can be no more fruit in a white blend than what bursts from this sauvignon blanc-chardonnay scene. Just released in South Africa and carried by Anthony and Olive (Hamilton Russell) on the plane. Chavignol is the reference point, with lightly structured sandstone soils bringing lightness, airiness and delicate fruit. Or think Jim Clendenen's Au Bon Climat out of Santa Barbara. It’s democratically priced (a Hamilton Russell first) without gratuitous sugar and still dry, tart and direct.

Dr. Owen Bargreen,

The 2018 Ashbourne white is composed of Sauvignon Blanc (80%) and Chardonnay (20%). It opens with aromas of white peach and gooseberry on the nose with some salted almond tones that round out the aromatics. The palate is highly refreshing as the wine unveils a notable richness and combination of citrus rind, tree fruit and with melon undertones that persist through the finish.
