About this winery

For Pedro Parra the purest expression of his passionate devotion to terroir is Clos des Fous, his collaboration with Francois Massoc, Paco Leyton, and Albert Cussen. Although the project is based in Pedro's home region of Bio Bio, 500km south of Santiago, the focus is not limited to making wines from Bio Bio: rather the idea is to discover (or rediscover) and celebrate great unknown terroirs throughout Chile - a vast and endlessly varied country - that is full of the vibrancy, uniqueness, and...

Notes about product

Sourced from multiple small vineyard sources in Itata which average 3 acres each and were planted in 1965. Soils are granite with an average altitude of 265ft. Lutte raisonee farming and bush vines provide an average yild of 2.5 tons/acre.

Winemaking notes

Hand harvested grapes from old vines of dry farming of Itata and Cauquenes. Fermented by the traditional artisan methods. Winemaker Francois Massoc uses selected yeast strains and zero stem inclusion. The elevage is done in vats and stainless steel tanks with 12 months lees contact and a 10 day cold soak.

Tasting notes

Beautiful dark ruby-red color with violet highlights. Outstanding fruit, with a nose full of red berries, black cherry, black pepper hints of violets. Those elements come through on the palate, with fresh black and red fruit, revealing a full-bodied wine. This wine opens generously, very silky and lush on the palate. In mid palate is round and velvety with very fine tannins and the excellent acidity enhance its liveliness and balance.

Does this really only cost 6,000 pesos? It’s a deliciously drinkable cuvée of País, Cinsault and a little Carignan, sourced from 70-year-old bush vines on granite soils. Sweet, sappy and unoaked, with red cherry and raspberry fruit and a tangy, stony undertow.

Pretty fruit here in a delicate and real way showing cherry, lemon rind and spice character. Medium body. Clean finish.

Marc Chapleau, October 2017

- Marc Chapleau
