About this winery

Domaine Chapel is a Beaujolais estate founded by David Chapel and Michele Smith-Chapel in the Cru Village of Régnié-Durette. The Chapels produced their first wine - a 2016 Juliénas “Côte de Bessay” - in partnership with the acclaimed Morgon estate Domaine Lapierre. Notes about product

In January of 2018, Domaine Chapel began working 2 hectares of vines in the Beaujolais Cru, Chiroubles. The wine is an assemblage of two high altitude (average 400 meters), steeply-sloped parcels: Saint-Roch & Poullet. Each parcel comprises about 1 hectare of vines, which are both east-facing, and planted to high density, gobelet trained vines. The land is worked organically and by hand. The average vine age of Saint-Roch is 55 years, and Poullet varies between 40 & 60 years old. The bedrock is granite and the soil is a blend of pink granite, sandstone and weathered rock fragments.

Winemaking notes

Hand harvested the second week of September. The whole cluster bunches go through a semicarbonic maceration with their indigenous yeasts. The grapes fermented as whole berries for 3 weeks before being pressed in a horizontal Vaslin press. An assemblage was made from the free run juice and the pressed juice and finished fermentation in the spring. Thick skins and small berries due to a proportion of millerandage in Saint-Roch, resulted in a darker juice.

William Kelley, August 2019

High-toned aromas of cherries, raspberries and spices introduce the 2018 Chiroubles , a medium to full-bodied, layered and fleshy wine with ripe acids and a rich core of fruit. It derives from steep parcels that have to be worked by hand.

Very attractive, fresh, wild blue fruit and a wealth of bright, mouthwatering strawberries, too. The palate has a very plush and nicely concentrated feel with soft, rich and ripe fruit flesh on offer.
