Notes about product

Felton Road farms four properties totaling 32 ha in the Bannockburn sub-region of Central Otago. Meticulous summer management of a single vertical shoot positioned (VSP) canopy ensures even and early fruit maturity. Shoot thinning, shoot positioning, leaf plucking, bunch thinning and harvest are all carried out by hand to ensure optimum quality fruit. Cover crops are planted between rows to assist in vine balance and to improve soil health and general biodiversity.

Winemaking notes

Various clones of Chardonnay (Mendoza, B95, B548, UCD6) were carefully hand harvested from Cornish Point and The Elms vineyards. The grapes were whole bunch pressed with the juice immediately flowing to barrel by gravity with no settling. Fermentation in French oak (mostly well-seasoned barrels) with indigenous yeasts has produced a wine with considerable complexity. A long and complete indigenous malolactic fermentation with only periodic stirring of the lees (Batonnage) combined with 10 months on full lees; has softened the acid for a rich and complex mouthfeel. This wine was fermented with indigenous yeast and was not fined or filtered.

Tasting notes

An inviting and complex nose of almond and apricot kernel with distinctive white florals, expressing more stonefruit aromas with palate that is textural, nutty and very long.

May 2020

Tight, fresh, unyielding, with no notable flint nor toast, this is brimming with zesty-fresh citrus and white fleshed fruit, also white flowers and a dash of crème fraîche à la Chablisienne. The palate is perfectly pitched in the mid-weight category, lifted by the merest prickle of CO2 coupled to ripe-firm acids. Great tension and energy overall, not to mention great length. Ultra-classy and elegant, drinking beautifully, but certainly happy in the cellar another half dozen years or more.

A very attractively ripe edition with good fruit weight and plenty of peach and melon aromas and flavors. Supple, smooth-honed palate texture and a wealth of delicious, drink-now appeal.

This vintage of Felton Road's blend of fruit from all four of its vineyards still bears the estate's signature...It's softly spicy with high-toned red berry and plum fruit, green peppercorn and slight mushroomy notes. The palate is neatly structured, hugged by savory, if somewhat blocky tannins. A characterful and approachable drop now.
