About this winery

Jean-Marc Brocard's origins lie in the Côte d'Or, a farmer's son from the village of Chaudenay-le-Château, not even the son of the vigneron. Following his father’s advice Jean-Marc studied Engineering leaving behind agricultural life. It was an accident of marriage that brought him to wine when he married Claudine (his childhood sweetheart), a vigneron's daughter from the village of St-Bris-le-Vineux in the valley of Yonne. Starting with single a hectare of vines from his father-in-law in...

Tasting notes

This current vintage offers floral and citrus aroma. A palate of great finesse, tangy and balanced with lively acidity on the finish. A very polished wine.

October 2021 (Vintage 2020)

Some of the vines here are over 70 years old. Even with a reticent, understated nose one can sense the energy and precision in this wine. There’s a lovely, creamy texture on the palate, with bright citrus notes and a long, lingering, savoury, mineral finish. A very fine example of Chablis which would compete very effectively against many a premier cru.

Anne Krebiehl MW, December 2020 (Vintage 2019)

The slightest touch of flinty reduction still plays around lemony brightness on the nose of this wine. The palate stays on a straight and narrow but concentrated path, focused on lemon freshness but rounded out with charming, riper notes of pear. This wine has quiet intensity, freshness and length.

April 2020

The 2019 Jean-Marc Brocard Chablis Sainte Claire is on point as an excellent example of why Chardonnays from this part of the world are so highly valued. This wine starts with ripe apple and mineral notes in its aromas and follows through with a hint of attractive chalkiness. Pair it with simple shellfish on the patio.

January 2020 (Vintage 2018)

The 2018 Chablis Sainte Claire (Organic) offers terrific depth and plenty of texture, along with clean, bracing underpinning that add both freshness and nuance without being overpowering. Lemon oil, tangerine, mango, white flowers, honey and mint are pushed forward in this decidedly bold Chablis. A whole range of more exotic, tropical notes develop with time in the glass. This is certainly intriguing.

December 2021 (Vintage 2020)

Smoky, flinty notes suggest some reduction at first but open nicely to reveal green-plum and yuzu aromas. Sourced from a single vineyard of 30-year-old, organically farmed vines, it's a fresh, cutting lime and lemon sip with a long, delightfully chalky finish. The wine drinks well young but also has good aging potential.

Bruce Sanderson, November 2015 (Vintage 2014)

"A textbook flinty aroma gives way to green apple, lemon and mineral flavors in this white, which shows fine depth and richness, offset by vibrant acidity. Excellent length."

Floral, apple, peach and smoky notes define this lively white. Balanced, picking up a touch of wet stone on the lingering aftertaste.

Some very ripe peaches and mangoes, as well as light aromas of honeysuckle. The palate has a succulent, juicy core of fleshy mangoes and nectarines. Neat and energetic.

A rich take on Chablis, yet with a salty tang to the apple, melon, yellow plum and lemon flavors. The chalky, minerally finish adds a sense of place.

Lemon and lime aromas here with crushed stones and chalky notes, too. The palate has a very taut feel with succulent grapefruit and orange flavors.

July 2023 (Vintage 2022)

The 2022 Chablis Sainte Claire, which comes from organically grown fruit within several large parcels, is one of the hidden gems from Brocard. The enticing nose offers Mirabelle, wet stone and nuanced patisserie scents, with just a hint of white asparagus in the background. The palate is well-balanced, with a crisp bead of acidity and commendable depth. This is a strong follow-up to the impressive 2021; who knows, it may surpass it.
