About this winery

The Story Andrea and Marcello Mantengoli’s parents and grandparents have been growers in Montalcino since 1933, but they never gave a second thought to becoming producers of Brunello. How could they? To them, only aristocrats, such as the Biondi-Santis, the Costantis, the Barbis and the Fraceschi d’Il Paggione, were worthy of making Brunello. This concept disappeared in the 1970s and 1980s when dozens of new Brunello estates were founded, mostly by growers like the Mantengoli family. When...

Notes about product

The family farm “La Rasa” has belonged to the Mantengoli family since 1933. The production of Brunello & Rosso wines began in 1988. The first production of the winery started with2,700 bottles of Brunello. This has been increased to 30,000 bottles. One hectare of vineyards has since been extended to 8.5 hectares.

Winemaking notes

The grape harvest normally occurs during the first two weeks of October. The production is approximately 60 qallons per hectare, due to the first selection that is made in August. When alcoholic and malolactic fermentation are complete, a period of 2 years follows, during which the wine reaches its full ripening inside traditional woods of 20 hl and few barriques (only 10%).

Tasting notes

Exquisitely balanced on the nose with a wide, persistent bouquet and fines touches of fruit and spices. Elegant, soft, round and velvety on the palate. Pair with red meat, game and seasoned cheese. Recommended with typical Tuscan dishes. Extensive ageing possible.

Intense aromas of kirsch liqueur and dried red berries with a meaty edge, leading to a palate with succulent and compressed tannins, carrying long, fresh plum and cherry flavours.

February 2018

La Serena's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino is a soft and modern wine from this beautiful appellation in southern Tuscany. The bouquet offers a medley of ripe fruit, sweet spice, espresso and a touch of bitter chocolate. The presentation here is supple and smooth. Like many of its peers made in the cooler 2013 vintage, the wine tapers out in terms of volume and texture once it hits the palate. The effect here is more downplayed, elegant and streamlined overall.

This is full of licorice, tar and leather aromas and flavors, along with accents of chocolate and spice. Solidly built, with a dense matrix of tannins and lively acidity. The flavors return on the lingering aftertaste.
