Product notes

The Barossa experienced a wetter and cooler than average winter and spring with good soil moisture levels. The Spring saw perfect grape ripening weather with balanced sugars, colours and natural acidity. These conditions resulted in a later harvest, which allowed grapes to ripen more slowly and evenly with a gradual accumulation of sugars and flavours, The yields were around 20 - 30% higher than the five-year average.

Production notes

Aged nineteen months in 15% new French and 85% older French oak.

Tasting notes

Lifted blueberry, blackcurrant and black olive are evident on the nose, with lovely cedar and hints of liquorice and sweet spice adding to the complexity. Bright and rich berry fruits coat the palate and mingle with brambly spice, hints of black olive and liquorice. Full-bodied with velvety, fine tannins adding to the structure which flows through the long, fruity and spicy finish.

August 2020

Matured in French oak (15% new) for 19 months. Only in a cool vintage such as this does the Barossa Valley provide varietal flavours as crisp and clear as those of this wine.

December 2021

Opaque violet. Expressive aromas of blackberry, cherry, tobacco and mocha on the smoke-accented nose. Fleshy and expansive in the mouth, offering primary black and blue fruit and bitter chocolate flavors and subtle licorice and cola notes that build in the glass. Becomes more lively with air and finishes long, spicy and precise, with fine-grained tannins lending gentle grip.

September 2020

This is cabernet in the mulberry, raspberry and red-plum fruit zone with hints of leaves and mint. The palate has a very plush, richly flavored core of ripe mulberries and plums. Smooth, creamy tannins. Soft.

November 2022 (Vintage 2020)

Lovely aromas of red and black currants, rose and ground cooking spice. Full-bodied with silky tannins and texture. Savory and a little meaty on the palate with good depth and intensity.

June 2019

Ripe blackcurrants, some leafy notes and plenty of spiced chocolate, leading to a very rich and juicy palate that is made to drink now.

April 2023 (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Blacksmith Cabernet Sauvignon is juicy and bright, with an uncomplicated array of red and purple fruits in the mouth. 2019 was a very warm (hot), dry vintage that suffered also from low yields. As a result, the wines en masse have a compacted, brooding nature, which this wine exudes. This is very good value for money and eloquently expresses of the Barossa terroir.
