About this winery

Weingut Molitor is one of Germany's greatest wine producers. Markus Molitor took over the winery in 1984, at only 20 years of age. He represents the eighth generation of his centuries-old Mosel winemaking family. The estate is centered in the historic town of Bernkastel, with 37 hectares of spectacular vineyards spread across 15 classic sites from Bernkastel and Graach to Wehlen and Zeltingen. This is viticulture at its most extreme, with very old ungrafted vines (many 100 years old or more)...

Notes about product

At heart of the vineyards, this plot stretches up the steep slopes around the winery buildings. It is located in a side valley directly opposite Zeltingen, where it faces almost due south. Light to medium-heavy stony soils of decomposed slate with a high proportion of iron produces mineral-flavoured and long-lived wines with delicate, elegant fruit. Apart from Riesling, the elegant Pinot Blanc (Weißburgunder) grapes are also grown here.

Winemaking notes

All Molitor Wines are made by spontaneous fermentation. The use of improving agents or industrial yeasts is refrained from. Molitor wines are fermented at low temperature slowly over months. The wines are then left to lie for several more months on the fine yeast to give them bloom and depth. Alongside maturation in stainless steel tanks, the wines are fermented and matured in large oak barrels to ensure an especially natural flavour.

Tasting notes

Vinified in stainless steel and oak, then aged on the lees for an additional year, the Molitor Pinot Blanc is a lush and elegant medium-bodied wine with strong fruit intensity. An incredibly long finish emphasizes its minerality. This 2017 needs a while to integrate as the acidity is quite pronounced and racy here.

David Schildknecht, January 2020

This year’s basic Molitor Pinot Blanc bottling – and “basic,” as usual, does the wine a disservice – weighs in at around 12% alcohol, but still evinces appealing lift to accompany its typical alliance of textural caress with juiciness and vivacity. Sweet corn and apple dominate on the nose and silken palate, while an almond undertone and an enlivening squeeze of grapefruit add charm en route to a refreshingly sustained finish. This won’t make you forget the amazing 2016, but is bound to prove delightfully versatile at table over the next several years.
