About this winery

David Schildknecht of the Wine Advocate implores consumers to drink more Beaujolais calling it a "happy hunting ground for jaded or bargain-seeking wine lovers" continuing a trend that has brought much greater exposure to the region over the past few vintages. We are thrilled to again offer one of the region's most exciting producers Domaine Mathieu and Camille Lapierre. Long-time followers will note change in name from Domaine M. Lapierre to Mathieu and Camille. Sadly Marcel passed away in...

Tasting notes

This structured and lovely Morgon is a benchmark wine for the region; cherries, concord grape and plums abound along with a firm structure, licorice, mineral and taut acidity.

September 2020

Lots of red and black bramble fruit on the nose with flowers, wet earth, old vine, moss and citrus peel, following through to a medium-to full-bodied palate with light, round tannins and a bright, vivid finish. It develops beautifully in the glass giving more and more purity of fruit and creamy round tannins. Low sulfur. From one of the masters of Beaujolais.

April 2022 (Vintage 2020)

Still has a whiff of youthful funk (from reduction), but after a couple of swirls of the glass this blossoms, becoming fragrant and expressive. The fine-grained tannins and mineral acidity give this a wonderful texture on the palate that’s not quite like anything else in Beaujolais. Very long, silky finish. From organically grown grapes. Unfiltered.

March 2023 (Vintage 2021)

Deep nose of spices, licorice and dried cherries with a pronounced flinty note. Cool and sleek but with impressive concentration for the 2021 vintage, this already has wonderful harmony right through the long, structured and stony finish. Bottled with low sulfur addition and unfiltered

May 2023 (Vintage 2021)

The 2021 Morgon Sulphité has a slightly brighter nose, more red fruit (Morello cherries and raspberry) commingling with blood orange. I find less of the oyster shell element juxtaposed against the Non-Sulphité iteration. The tannins are very fine here, with perfect acidity. It is fresh and brittle in texture, with so much vivacity towards the crunchy finish. Wonderful. Initially, I preferred the Non-Sulphité but upon further consideration, this seems to convey more amplitude.

Josh Raynolds, August 2021 (Vintage 2019)

Deep magenta. Vibrant, spice-tinged aromas of raspberry, cherry liqueur and pungent flowers are complemented by a minerally nuance that steps up with aeration. Sappy and energetic on the palate, offering intense cherry, red berry, candied lavender and spicecake flavors that put on weight through the back half. Finishes gently tannic and impressively long, leaving exotic spice and red berry preserve notes behind.
