About this winery

Situated in the heart of the Mosel's finest vineyards, the Max Ferdinand Richter estate has been in the family for over 300 years. The family owns 48 acres of priceless vines on the magnificent stretch of the river between Erden and Brauenberg including all the best sites: Graacher Himmelreich, Wehlener Sonnenuhr and Brauenberger Juffer and Richter's monopole Veldenzer Eilsenberg. August 2019

The 2018er Erdener Treppchen Riesling Spätlese was harvested at a f ull 94° Oechsle in the prime (“dark red”) Busslay sector of the vineyard, and was fermented down to sweet levels of residual sugar (85 g/l). It offers a gorgeous nose of white peach, fine herbs, floral elements and smoke. The wine develops the gorgeous juiciness of an old-style “drinking Auslese” with orchard fruits, whipped sour cream and a nice kick of zest on the palate and leaves one with plenty of mouthwatering fruits in the long and playful finish.

August 2018

The 2017er Erdener Treppchen Spätlese is made from fruit harvested at 90° Oechsle in the prime Busslay sector of the vineyard. This is still quite reductive at first and only gradually reveals some superbly complex scents of yellow peach, mirabelle, a hint of apricot, earthy spices and smoke. The wine proves intense and concentrated on the palate, where the initial touch of sweetness adds to the smoothness and delicacy of the structure. The finish is nicely long and complex. This rich expression of a Spätlese only needs a decade to fully blossom.

David Schildknecht, January 2018 (Vintage 2016)

Orange and pineapple are tinged with sage and sassafras on a site-typical nose that anticipates the zest, pungency and sap exhibited on a palate whose glycerol-richness and creaminess point toward the influence of a bit of botrytis. The lusciously lingering finish displays admirable clarity and ample primary juiciness, along with intriguingly site-typical smokiness and crushed stone suffusion.
