About this winery

Sette Ponti reflects the vision of Dr. Antonio Moretti, who took over the estate from his father in the late 1990's, and immediately began producing estate-bottled wines. The vineyards occupy a total of 150 acres, at an altitude of 200 to 300 meters; the oldest vines (mostly sangiovese) date from 1935. The soil is a classic Tuscan mixture of sand, clay, limestone, and schist-based galestro. The estate - 750 acres in total - is farmed in the traditional Tuscan way, so that the vineyards are...

Winemaking notes

The grapes were hand sorted and destemmed, and the skins were broken rather than crushed. Fermentation took place in a combination of temperature-controlled and lined open-top tanks, with manual punching down and maceration, followed by malolactic fermentation. Lots were blended when the wine was placed in barriques and also at the first racking. The wine was aged 18 months in new French barriques and 12 months in bottle prior to release.

Tasting notes

Ruby red in colour with violet hues. Spicy aromas dominate the nose with ripe blackberry and other berry fruits. Rich flavours of ripe berries greet on the palate with hints of chocolate and balsamic.

August 2017

Plenty of blackcurrant, blackberry and dark chocolate character with oyster shell and walnut undertones. Full body, extremely tight and structured with blueberry and light vanilla and coffee highlights. A gorgeous Oreno.

Antonio Galloni, April 2018

The 2015 Oreno is fabulous. Rich, sumptuous and yet very much medium in body, the 2015 has it all going on. Silky tannins and juicy, pliant fruit add to the wine's considerable appeal. Succulent dark cherry, plum, chocolate, mocha and licorice infuse this racy, showy Tuscan red. The 2015 is one of the best vintages of Oreno I have tasted of late.

October 2017

Rich and dense, but elegant, with a dusty swath of tannins coating the finish. Black cherry, black currant and mineral flavors hold court, with a fresh, balanced feel on the finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.

August 2018

They scrubbed the sangiovese back in 2009 in favour of a 50/40/10 blend of merlot, cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. The nose is seductive with rich, expressive dark fruits flecked with more inviting, savoury black liquorice. The attack is rich but juicy, keeping it fresh and moving on the palate. It's delicious stuff and it's just a baby. The finesse and the balance here is what is missed locally, and really sets this classic apart from the norm. All Tuscan. The wine spends 18 months in new French Allier barriques followed by an additional 12 months in bottle.
