About this winery

Identified by the Wine Spectator as 'the best winemaker in the appellation of Brunello di Montalcino', Giancarlo Pacenti took over running his family's 60 hectare estate in 1988. His wines are renowned for their combination of richness and structure. They somehow remain remarkably fresh, pure, and elegant, despite being aged in French oak barriques rather than the large Slovenian oak botti many producers choose in the pursuit of freshness, purity and elegance. March 2021 (Vintage 2016)

A pure and focused version, with cherry, strawberry and currant fruit shaded by mineral and tobacco accents. Vibrant and harmonious, this is all about the fruit, with a well-integrated structure and terrific length on the finish.

September 2019

Such lovely aromas of flowers and red fruit with some cedar and spice. Hot terra cotta. Full-bodied, very round and soft textured with beautiful fruit and balance. Fresh and vivid. Such balance and beauty.

November 2022 (Vintage 2018)

Complex and layered with truffles, white pepper, cardamom, dried cherries, blueberries, bay leaves, fresh mushrooms and potpourri. Sophisticated and weightless, with a medium to full body and very finely-knit tannins that are more textural. All so beautifully integrated.

November 2021 (Vintage 2017)

Beautiful aromas of cherries, plums and fresh flowers with some oranges follow through to a full body with round and chewy tannins that are polished and refined for the hot 2017 vintage. Flavorful and fresh finish. Remains in check and toned. Drink in 2023 and onwards.

Luca Gardini, October 2021 (Vintage 2017)

Beautiful version 2017 also for Brunello from the youngest vineyards, from a sustainable viticulture. Nose that shows small red fruits, pomegranate above all, then fresh thyme and nice mentholated nuance in the closing. The mouthfeel is equally mentholated, with a crispy and taut mouthfeel.

April 2020

Effusive aromas and flavors of black currant, black cherry, plum and spice mark this generous, polished red. Well-structured, picking up earth and iron accents for good measure. Shows terrific balance and a long finish.

November 2023 (Vintage 2019)

A beguiling blend of mint, cedar and spiced orange slowly gives way to dried strawberries as the spicy and seductive 2019 Brunello di Montalcino Pelagrilli blossoms in the glass. Silky and round, it flows across the palate with a dense wave of ripe red and black fruits complicated by a bitter bite of clove and dark chocolate. It finishes long and inward, structured with sweet tannins as echoes of violet and lavender fade. I can really feel the heavy clay soils in this rendition of Pelagrilli, as they add a weight and plush feeling, yet still, the energy of the vintage shines through.
