About this winery

Olivier Humbrecht is one of the world's most renowned winegrowers. He is a Master of Wine and has been described by Robert Parker as the greatest white winemaker on earth. Yet he is very soft spoken, humble, and self-deprecating, which makes him perfectly suited to his assumed role as a global ambassador of wine. He is a champion of terroir, biodynamic farming principles, and non-interventionist winemaking, whose family have been winegrowers in Alsace for 12 generations (since 1620). He is...

The nose on this wine conveys both dried and fresh lemon peel, some smoky reduction and wet chalk. On the palate, cool concentration homes in on a ripe but tingling notion of lemon zest. Earthiness anchors this all along with lemon notes that offer vivid freshness. Stony, chalky lemony purity seems to radiate and real energy propels this powerful wine forward. The finish is bone dry and long.

Next to the ripe mango and papaya fruit, the floral delicacy is equally striking in the nose. For a concentrated Alsace gewurz this is remarkably cool and bright with a level of clarity you don’t often find in this category. Delicate hint of sweetness. From biodynamically grown grapes.

A very succulent gewurz with tons of yellow fruit, as well as rose aromas, then some spice joins the picture as it aerates in the glass. At once very creamy, frankly off-dry yet very fresh on the palate, this is delightful now. Drink now, either by itself or with mature cheese. From biodynamically grown grapes.

The 2018 Gewurztraminer Roche Calcaire is a beautiful wine made from the estate’s young vines across multiple vineyards planted on limestone. Rich and expansive on the palate, with striking translucence, the 2018 is so expressive today. Even with all of its obvious depth, the 2018 remains light on its feel. Lemon confit, chamomile, tangerine oil and white flowers add striking raciness. The Roche Calcaire Gewurztraminer is one of the highlights in the range of 2018s. Its 40 grams per liter of residual sugar are very nicely balanced.

June 2023 (Vintage 2020)

A floral white, silky on the palate, with orange peel acidity and flavors of baked pear, tarragon, candied pink grapefruit and stone.

November 2022 (Vintage 2019)

This wine is restrained on the nose, offering delicate white blossoms and freshly cut parsley. The palate is all about texture, which is weighty, velvety and lovely. Sweet honeyed tones provide just a hint of fresh dill and tarragon. The medium-length finish is clean and tangy.

Sweetness level described as ‘the perception of sweetness is more obvious in its youth, the sweetness gradually diminishes with time’. Crisp but with definite sweetness. Opulent and flattering. Lot of matière here and very long indeed. But what to serve it with? Rich, creamy pâté?
