The Pommard Fremiers from the Domaine de Courcel is a bit reserved initially, but flavours of red cherry fruit and notes of earth, smoke, and spice open on the palate. The texture is silky and fine, with subtle tannin and balanced acidity. The 0.79-hectare parcel is low on the slope in deeper clay-rich soils. Among the domaine’s production, this will take a few years to open but should age nicely for ten to fifteen years after that.

Once again very ripe aromas of cassis, poached (but not cooked) dark berries, earth and a whiff of menthol precede the firmer but slightly less concentrated larger-scaled flavors that flash evident power on the balanced, austere and compact finale that delivers sneaky good length. This is a big and compact wine that is frank in its delivery. As such, it’s robust, even burly, Fremiers that is pointless to buy unless you expressly intend to cellar it appropriately.

This is also overtly floral in character with a plenitude of spice elements complementing the ripe dark berry scents. There is excellent tension to the dense, sleekly muscular and quite powerful flavors that deliver fine length on the balanced if noticeably austere finale. This too could use better depth but more will almost certainly develop. (91-94)/2033+
