Le projet Shaw + Smith a vu le jour en 1989, au cours d'un long dîner, lorsque les cousins Martin Shaw et Michael Hill Smith ont décidé de concrétiser un rêve qu'ils caressaient depuis longtemps, faire du vin ensemble. Ils produisent un sauvignon blanc, un chardonnay issu d'une sélection parcellaire, un shiraz issu d'un climat frais, et plus récemment, de petites quantités de riesling et de pinot noir. An exciting lean and lively nose signals this is the type of taut, edgy Pinot Noir that the Adelaide Hills has struggled to capture, despite the region being heavily planted to the variety. This is a model of winemaking restraint, allowing the vineyard to speak, with fleshy cherry and hint of tart mandarin providing a comforting tone, but its firm acidity and ripe, stalky grip ensuring good discipline is maintained in the shape and structure of a svelte flavour profile.

This is a model of winemaking restraint, allowing the vineyard to shine, with fleshy cherry and hint of tart mandarin providing comfort, though its firm acidity and stalky grip ensures good structure and svelte line.

Shaw & Smith was founded in 1989 by cousins Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW (who also own Tolpuddle in Tasmania). Planted in 1999, and purchased in 2012, their Lenswood vineyard sits at 500m on loam soils over clay and shale. Whole bunches ferment in new and used puncheons then the wine matures for 10 months in barrel, 30% new. Anne Krebiehl MW: Slightly oaky and smoky, but bright and crunchy, lightbodied, with pretty, almost confected red fruit at the core. Fine freshness. Justin Knock MW: Open, creamy nose, a bit reduced. Caramel and violets, bacon, blue fruits, a little short and tight. Warm finish. Dirceu Vianna Junior MW: Pure and precise aromas, exciting. Forest fruits and roses with sweet spices. Excellent concentration, sophisticated structure. Smooth, delicious finish.
