About this winery

Aldo Conterno was born in 1931, the second son of Giacomo Conterno; his family had been winegrowers in Piemonte for five generations. He left Italy in 1954 with the intention of establishing a winery in the Napa Valley with two uncles who lived in San Francisco. October 2022 (Vintage 2018)

Bright, intense ruby garnet. Graphite, blood orange, raspberry, fine leather and a hint of cranberry on the very complex nose, plus good use of wood. The palate has great notion and firm drive, tightens up with firm tannins, clearly worked fruit, already very accessible, can still be aged longer.

Aromas of dried flowers, dried strawberries, lavender, and hazelnuts. Some roses, too. Full-bodied, chewy and powerful, yet the tannins are polished and very energetic. Lots of them, yet with gorgeous roundness and tension. Tight at the end, suggesting very serious aging potential.

October 2022 (Vintage 2018)

A tight nose, but the aromas of dark-red berries and violets are very pretty. Some nice forest-floor notes blend in well. Full-bodied with very well-formed tannins that show both polish and finesse, providing a solid backbone to the wine, but without being chewy. The finish is long and controlled, guided by the super tannins. Excellent winemaking. They got the best out of the vintage here. Best from 2025.

April 2021

Menthol, vanilla and macerated cherry waft from the glass as this red settles into its core themes of cherry, plum, tar, tobacco, leather and spice. Muscular tannins hold court on the finish, yet well-proportioned, long and classy.

December 2022 (Vintage 2018)

Sun-kissed hay, cherry, plum, iron and tar flavors are the highlights of this expressive red. Dense and firmly structured, with a tightly knit, tannic finish.

November 2021 (Vintage 2017)

Offering plum, cherry, iron, eucalyptus and black pepper aromas and flavors, this broad red has absorbed the oak treatment pretty well already, with a dense matrix of tannins and lively acidity. Balanced and long, ending with elements of mineral and spice.
