About this winery

Azelia is still something of a Barolo lover's secret. Though the estate is not a high-profile one, proprietor Luigi Scavino is cousin of Enrico Scavino of the renowned Paolo Scavino estate, and shares ownership of the famed Fiasco hill in Castiglione Falletto with him. Product notes

The fruit comes from 60-year-old vines on a hilltop site, the "point," or punta, in Castiglione Falletto.

Tasting notes

Intense and bright, with a strong but gentle character, offering pure cherry, plum and blackberry aromas. On the palate, dark fruit flavors are accented by earth and leather. Balanced acidity finishing off with a dusty baker's chocolate note.

Monica Larner, July 2021 (Vintage 2017)

A release of about 6,400 bottles, the Azelia 2017 Barbera d'Alba Punta from vintner Luigi Scavino is a plump and rich expression with plenty of black fruit. In the 2017 vintage, Barbera got what it loves most, plenty of heat and sunshine. Blackberry and black cherry abound, but the wine is not overripe or jammy. In fact, it maintains a good sense of elegance and balance throughout. The fruit comes from 60-year-old vines on a hilltop site, the "point," or punta, in Castiglione Falletto. When you're ready to open it, pull up a recipe for a classic brasato alla Barbera.
