About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Notes about product

The Adrianna vineyard is located at almost 5,000’ ft elevation in the Gualtallary sub-district of the Tupungato region, Mendoza. The rocky, gravely soil prevents deep root growth and allows for ideal drainage conditions. The cool nights allow for very slow ripening, optimal acid retention and low yields.

Winemaking notes

Grapes were cold settled for 12 hours in stainless steel tanks at 6º C., followed by fermentation in French oak barrels for 45 - 95 days at 16°C. Partial malolactic fermentation. Aged for 12-16 months in 2nd, 3d and 4th use French oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered.

March 2019

Aromas of cooked pears, apples, lemons and crushed stones. Salty, too. Full and deep with a solid core of fruit and a bright and citric finish. Very minerally and bright. Starts off slowly and then takes off.

One of two brilliant Chardonnays from the “Grand Cru” site of the Adrianna Vineyard, this focused, refined, low-alcohol white is saline and complex with lovely leesy weight, notes of citrus peel and crème fraîche, stylish oak and a long, satisfying finish. An Argentinian Meursault Premier Cru.

October 2019

I tasted two vintages of the top whites, 2017 and 2018, and the wines perfectly show the conditions of each of the vintages, which were very different. Harvested very early to compensate the low yields and the warm end of the ripening season, the 2017 White Stones Chardonnay is a tad riper than the 2018, but it's a lot subtler and less ripe than I'd have expected from a warm year like 2017, like this part of the Adrianna vineyard is able to cushion the effect of the temperatures. The palate combines great intensity and pungent minerality, which is a texture and mouthfeel rather than a flavor. This has a contained 12.9% alcohol and very good freshness
