About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

Notes about product

Located in the far southerly growing region of Altamira en La Consulta, the Nicasia vineyard is the only planting of the special Catena Selection of Malbec cuttings in this traditional area for Malbec. La Consulta was Nicolás Catena’s father Domingo’s prefered Malbec location.

Production notes

100% whole cluster and 90% whole berry fruit is hand-loaded into 225-500 liter new French oak barrels for a 100% barrel fermentation for a period of 15 days, allowing seamless oak integration. The fermentation temperature is kept low, extracting intense aromas, and the cap management is done by hand to ensure soft, gentle flavors and tannin extraction. Wild yeasts. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in barrel leaves considerable lees and sediment. The wine is aged in French oak barrels for 18 months, followed by 24 months of aging in bottle before release.

Tasting notes

The Catena Zapata Nicasia Malbec is a wine that is complex and expressive, packed with aromas of ripe berries. The palate expresses a fine combination of creamy violet, ripe blueberries, and vanilla.

December 2016

The 2013 Malbec Catena Zapata Nicasia Vineyard is produced with grapes from the vineyard that names it--a vineyard planted in 1997 in the Altamira zone of Valle de Uco. It's mostly Malbec with some 4% Cabernet Franc, but the two grapes fermented together. It has less Cabernet Franc than other years because 2013 was fresh enough that just that pinch provided enough of the character they are looking for. They call this "the most Malbec of our Malbecs" and it has the textbook aromas of violets and red berries with perfectly integrated oak. The palate is also elegant and fresh and showcases the telltale round tannins of Malbec. This is truly outstanding.

May 2017

Very pleasing herbal, mint, plum notes leading onto a citrus finish. Harmonious and elegant, there is an extra dimension here with potential to develop.

October 2017

Catena’s Nicasia Vineyard is located in Mendoza’s Uco Valley. The vineyard has 100-acres planted to Malbec, which is set on sandy soils at 3500 feet elevation. The 2013 wine was aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak prior to bottling prior to an additional 24 months in the bottle. This inky colored wine is rather reticent at first and needs some time to unwind before eventually releasing seductive aromatics reminiscent of black cherry compote, crème de cassis, blueberry pie, mocha and graphite nuances all taking shape. Stunningly smooth and soft on the mid-palate, this wine shows off blackberry jam, espresso bean, dark chocolate shavings and blueberry pie flavors which expand beautifully across the palate. Beautifully structured, and highly gratifying, this world-class Malbec will cellar fabulously for many years to come.

May 2017

There’s 4% of Cabernet Franc to add extra complexity to this impressive, whole bunchfermented Malbec from La Consulta. Rich, floral and densely coloured, it’s a plush, structured, intense cuvée with plum and mulberry fruit, some clove spice and well integrated oak.

June 2017

A riper more fruit-forward young wine. Full body, round and velvety texture and a savory, rich finish. Love the intensity. Dark fruit and figs.
