About this winery

Tenuta Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona is a spectacular estate in one of the most beautiful and unspoiled regions of Italy. It is located in the hills south of the ancient town of Montalcino, above the River Orcia and not far from the legendary medieval Abbey of S. Antimo. It is a classic Tuscan farm: a very large property of 425 acres, devoted to vineyards, olive groves, cereal crops, pasture, and woodland. The beautiful 17th century Palazzo was built by the Abbot of S. Antimo. For centuries it...

Extremely perfumed and decadent with dried flowers and spices and fresh mushrooms. Cherries, too. Full body. Solid core of fruit, yet ever so fine tannins. Goes on for minutes. Such beautifully crafted tannins.

Editors' Choice

May 2019 (Vintage 2014)

Fragrant and loaded with finesse, this radiant, full-bodied red opens with enticing scents of ripe black-skinned fruit, iris, cake spice and a whiff of camphor. On the linear yet delicious palate, elegant tannins and bright acidity support succulent black cherry, plum and licorice before a lingering tobacco finish.

November 2022 (Vintage 2018)

Roasted herbs, walnuts, olives, dried cherries and balsamic on the nose with a touch of leather and sage. It’s full-bodied with firm, finely-knit tannins. Creamy and so well integrated with depth and class.

Cellar Sellection

April 2017

Dark spice, ripe berry, forest floor, Mediterranean brush and new leather aromas lead the nose on this powerfully structured wine. On the full-bodied palate, baking spice, licorice and pipe tobacco notes accent a juicy black cherry core while firm, velvety tannins provide the framework.

Michael Godel, February 2016 (Vintage 2010)

More than a classic vintage for this seminal bottle of Sangiovese. The liqueur is so comfortably and rigorously distilled, the floral aspects fresh in their potpourri disguise. The aromatics, like eclipses, arrive early, but tend to exact themselves profoundly. Balance is everything with wine and transparently so for Brunello because if the tannins are overdone than pleasure can’t ever be truly discerned. Here they are like rhythmic, venting spasms at the end of a sentence. This offers early accessibility in spite of its ferocity. Drink 2019-2030. Tasted February 2016.

December 2016

Wow. I love the texture and beauty of this young Brunello. Medium to full body with a dense and tightly compacted palate. Dried cherry light cedar and chocolate. It goes on for minutes. Gorgeous now. Excellent acid fruit balance, but will improve with age.

February 2016 (Vintage 2011)

The aromas of wet earth, sliced mushroom and blueberry are very pretty. Full body, firm tannins. Structured and firm. Excellent. One of the wines of the vintage.

Antonio Galloni, February 2016 (Vintage 2011)

The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is fabulous. In 2011, proprietor Paolo Bianchini bottled just one Brunello. That commitment to quality comes through loud and clear. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco and licorice all flesh out in an effortless, incredibly inviting wine. The warmth of the vintage and the natural generosity of these vineyards in Castelnuovo is evident, yet the 2011 possesses remarkable balance to match all of that intensity. I don't expect the 2011 to make old bones, but is gorgeous today. Readers should expect a flamboyant, decadently full-throttle wine built on voluptuousness and generous, racy fruit. Bianchini gave the 2011 three full years in cask.

May 2014

The cycling-mad Paolo Bianchini only uses Slavonian oak on his Brunello, keeping his barriques for his Sant’Antimo. This benefited from the inclusion of the old vine Pianrosso fruit in 2009 and it’s very impressive. Structured, sensitively oaked and sweet, with silky tannins, chalky acidity and a hint of wild Mediterranean herbs. It carries its alcohol with ease.

Aromas of dried cherries and plums with hints of flowers follow through to a full body with velvety tannins and a juicy, meaty, fruity aftertaste. Turns to chocolate powder as well. Drink or hold.

K.O., May 2016 (Vintage 2011)

Earthy and structured, this opens with aromas suggesting underbrush, grilled porcini, sunbaked earth, wild berry and dried aromatic herb. The big, bold palate doles out layers of mature black cherry, raspberry jam, licorice, sage, tobacco and black tea. Firm, velvety tannins provide structure and finesse. Drink 2019–2029.

March 2016 (Vintage 2010)

Very bitter on the mid-palate and finish, but pleasantly so, with charred black fruit, dried herbs and cigar box. Full-bodied with layers of complexity. Pair with filet mignon.

March 2017

Good full red. Youthful, concentrated aromas of saline red berries and orange blossom. Then sweeter, with densely focused flavours of red cherry, smoky plums and milk chocolate, complicated by a strong mineral nuance. Displays noteworthy savory nuances on the finish and puts on considerable weight in the glass.
