About this winery

Located high above the town of Ampuis and the Rhône River, Domaine Jamet produces tiny quantities of stunning Côte-Rôtie. The estate was founded in the 1950’s by Joseph Jamet and he began domaine bottling in 1976. In 1991 his son’s Jean-Luc and Jean-Paul took charge of the business slowly acquiring small parcels to expand the estate. Jean-Luc left in 2013 and today Jean-Paul and his wife Corrine run 7 hectares of beautiful vineyards. The estate is spread across 16 different lieux-dits...

October 2017

Jamet's Côte Brune is a historical oddity rather than the result of following the single vineyard trend. It once represented 50% of production, but as Jean-Paul has increased holdings over the decades, it's now just a small percentage, at just 2,000 bottles on average. It is consistently one of the greatest wines in the appellation, and 2016 is a particularly compelling vintage. It has a beautifully floral aromatic profile, with underlying forest berries and fresh earth. It has intense freshness and precision on the palate, with a pleasing grain and sinew to the tannins that promise future textural pleasure. A touch of resin on the long, saline finish adds complexity to what is a complete, balanced and concentrated wine. So elegant and effortless.

You hope for a few vintages like this in your life, says Jean-Paul Jamet. This is Domaine Jamet's only single-vineyard bottling, made every year. Rich and round on the palate, full of incense - rose and frankincense and all-enveloping star anise. It has exceptionally fine tannins with a beautiful lush density - sweet and chalky with a dark chocolate flavour. So fresh and aromatic with black pepper and dried rose alongside pinpoint acidity. A very rich and supremely opulent Côte Brune with an amazing cross between the smoky and the floral. A seamless wine. From barrel this was sheer perfection, so could well be worthy of 100 points in bottle.

December 2022 (Vintage 2019)

"Saturated ruby. Powerfully assertive aromas of ripe black raspberry, cherry liqueur and violet pick up olive, cola and incense nuances with air. Juicy, focused and deeply concentrated, this wine offers intense black and blue fruit, olive paste, floral pastille and exotic spice flavors that become more lively as the wine stretches out. The interplay of richness and energy here is superb, and the wonderfully long, spice- and mineral-driven finish features harmonious tannins and reverberating florality."

December 2019

The 2017 Côte Rôtie Côte Brune is more floral as well as exotic, with full-bodied, powerful notes of smoked game, ground pepper, violets, and framboise. Brought up in 25% new larger barrels, it has a deep, concentrated mid-palate, beautiful purity of fruit, and enough tannins to warrant a solid decade of bottle age. It’s a quintessential, more classic example of Côte Rôtie compared to the more hedonistic and bombastic 2018.

September 2019

Inky ruby. An assertively perfumed bouquet evokes fresh black/blue fruits, star anise, olive, potpourri and licorice. A smoky mineral accent builds steadily in the glass. Sweet and penetrating on the palate, offering vibrant, spice-laced dark berry liqueur, smoky bacon and floral pastille flavors that are firmed by a core of juicy acidity. Clings with superb tenacity on the youthfully tannic finish, leaving behind sappy blue fruit, floral and mineral notes.

(30% new oak): Inky ruby. Deeply pitched toffee and cherry compote scents are complicated by notes of licorice, pipe tobacco and fruitcake. Lush, palate-coating black and blue fruit and violet flavors show excellent clarity and lift thanks to a strong dose of spiciness. Lingers with intense sweetness, building tannins and excellent tenacity, leaving smoke and licorice notes behind. This serious wine really deserves patience.

February 2022 (Vintage 2019)

The 2019 Côte Rôtie Côte Brune is quintessential Jamet with its aromatics, balance, purity, and length, as well as just classic, old-school Côte Rôtie flair. Offering up lots of red, black, and even some blue fruits, it has ample bacon fat and liquid flower nuances, full-bodied richness, a multi-dimensional texture, and a great, great finish. It’s another wine Northern Rhône lovers need to have in their cellar, and it’s going to check in with the greats from both this producer and the appellation.

January 2022 (Vintage 2019)

Also in tank at the time of my visit, the 2019 Cote Rotie Cote Brune is another legend in the making. Violets, roses, herbal tea, chocolate and red berries all mingle easily on the nose, while the medium to full-bodied palate is concentrated and intense; it's paradoxically also silky and nearly weightless. Imagine a gentle whirlwind of airy flavors pushing into every cranny of the palate with intoxicating motes of flavor, then lingering there for minutes.

August 2018

As normal, the 2016 Côte Rôtie Côte Brune is like the classic Côte Rôtie only slightly more dark fruited and concentrated, and yet also more seamless and elegant, with Jean-Paul always describing this cuvée as more feminine (I’m not sure I agree with him on that point). It has fabulous density in its assorted dark fruits, olive tapenade, bacon fat, and smoked earth aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied, seamless, pure, and yet beautifully concentrated, it’s another incredible, classic 2016 that will benefit from short-term cellaring and age gracefully.

Powerful, smoke- and spice-tinged black/blue fruit, exotic spice, pipe tobacco and violet aromas show superb clarity and building minerality. Deeply concentrated and broad in the mouth, offering alluringly sweet cherry and blackberry liqueur, fruitcake, salty olive and violet pastille flavors plus a hint of allspice. The strikingly long, penetrating finish features strong, minerally cut, an echo of sappy dark fruit and chewy tannins that come in late.
