About this winery

El Enemigo, “the enemy”. The struggle that most defines us in our lives is the one that we wage with our selves. We are all our own worst enemies. This is the credo behind the name on the label. The wines of El Enemigo are enigmatic, charismatic, and verging on iconoclastic. In that way the wines reflect their maker, Alejandro Vigil, an almost Picasso-like personality. “Ale”, as he is known, is the head winemaker at the iconic Bodega Catena Zapata, but he has many loves. August 2022 (Vintage 2020)

The 2020 Sémillon El Enemigo from Agrelo, Luján de Cuyo hails from a 70-year-old vineyard. Aged with flor for a year before 15 months in barrels, it’s a golden yellow in the glass. On the nose there are notes of flint, honey, a little hazelnut and cashew nut underneath the flor-based aromas of white flowers and pear. In the mouth, however, it’s broad with a good, voluminous flow and a clove backdrop. Intense and creamy with a sustained layer of salinity, the stylistic acrobatics have opened up new possibilities for the varietal.

March 2019

This is very pretty with waxy, dried-lemon and clove aromas that follow through to a full body, layered fruit and bright acidity. Some vanilla from the oak gives it complexity and depth. Creamy texture.

March 2022 (Vintage 2020)

This has an intense nose of dried apple, grilled pineapple, cedar, salted butter, waxed lemon, green olive and smoked almond. It’s medium-bodied with a layered and concentrated palate. Saline, toasty and smoky. Drink now or hold.

2022 (Vintage 2020)

From vineyards planted at an altitude of 930 meters in the Agrelo area, this is a semillon aged for 15 months in barrels with 20% under a veil of flor. The creamy sensation is strong here, leaving a friendly, round texture. Ripe fruit and honey flavors take over the palate.
