About this winery

Located in the commune of Radda in Chianti, The Fattoria Poggerino winery is one of the properties of a larger estate which used to belong to Prince Ginori Conti, a descendant of one of Florence’s oldest families. Floriana Ginori Conti inherited the winery from her father in the 1970s and in 1980 together with her husband Fabrizio Lanza, began to produce a Chianti Classico with the “Poggerino” label. In 1999 she handed over the property to her two children; Piero and Benedetta Lanza, who...

Production notes

After a careful selection in the vineyard the grapes are destemmed and pressed. The alcoholic fermentation begins without the addition of selected yeasts and proceeds at 28°/30°C. The entire process of vinification and maceration takes place in concrete tanks for approximately 35 days with pump overs and manual punch downs. In December the new wine is racked to casks of 20/25hl of Slavonian oak and tonneau of 4/5hl of French oak where the malolactic fermentation takes place. After ageing for 12 months the wine is assembled and bottled the following spring. The wine is aged for a minimum of 8 months.

Tasting notes

Bright ruby red colour. On the nose notes of blackberries, leather, cherries and red currant with a touch of liquorice and vanilla. Sweet and persistent tannins.

Michaela Morris , February 2023 (Vintage 2021)

Abutting the Albola estate, which it was once part of, Poggerino counts 12.5 hectares within the UGA of Radda. While the wines exhibit the elegance and succulence of the zone, they have a denser, darker expression than some of their peers. The 2021 clearly demonstrates this concentration while remaining pure and fresh. It is replete with spicy wild woodland berries hemmed in by terracotta-like tannins. Textured and layered with substance and structure, it merits a few years in the cellar.

Antonio Galloni, August 2023 (Vintage 2021)

The 2021 Chianti Classico is exceptional. A burst of ripe red/purplish fruit, lavender, spice, menthol, licorice and tobacco are all dialed up in this racy, layered Chianti Classico. The 2021 was aged in 20% in cement and 80% in 20-25hL casks. It’s a serious wine that will benefit from cellaring. The Chianti Classico points to a potentially superb vintage here for the top bottlings.
