About this winery

Rocca di Castagnoli is an ancient medieval fortress which was the origin of the Castagnoli hamlet. Throughout its history, this place was owned by numerous noble families, including Tempi (whose coat of arms still represents the company) and Ricasoli. The winery, which already existed in the 18th century, has always been the economic center of the village and has always been distinguished by its excellent production quality, as evidenced in 1773 by a visit from Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo, who...

Production notes

The grapes used to make this wine are produced in all the property’s plots, 72 hectares around the medieval fortress and the village after which the company is named. The soils are medium-textured, rich in rock fragments typical of the Alberese area and limestone. Fermentation and Malolactic fermentation are carried out in stainless steel tanks. Ageing is in typical Chianti barrels and in steel then 6 months in the bottle before release.

July 2021 (Vintage 2017)

Ripe berries, dried flowers and orange peel with some smoke. Full-bodied with round, chewy tannins that provide lots of texture and structure. From organically grown grapes.

September 2021 (Vintage 2017)

The 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Stielle takes all the signatures of the estate and turns up the volume, resulting in an ample, dramatic wine that hits all the right notes. Black cherry, mocha, lavender, spice and leather build into the intense, palate-staining finish. The 2017 is such a gorgeous and vivid Gran Selezione. Don't miss it.

Monica Larner, February 2023 (Vintage 2017)

With 10,000 bottles made, the Rocca di Castagnoli 2017 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Stielle is a fully organic expression of 100% Sangiovese from a hot and dry growing season. Signs of the vintage come through with hints of tertiary definition and mature fruit. Baked plum, cola, black olive and rusty earth emerge first. The finish is mid-weight, and the wine ends with dry tannins that suggest a slightly shorter drinking window. This is an expression of hard work in a challenging vintage.
