About this winery

With over 60 years of professional experience, Santa Ema are pioneers in the Maipo Valley where they are always searching for the best expressions of terroir, from the mountains to the coast. The beginnings of Santa Ema date back to the beginning of the 20th century, when don Pedro Pavone Voglino, an Italian immigrant, sportsperson, and businessman, discovered a great terroir in Isla de Maipo, where the head offices still operate today. The founder and his son, Félix Pavone Arbea, an...

Product notes

The 2015 vintage was characterized by low precipitation and occasional warm weather at the end of the winter, which encouraged early and even budbreak. Some rain fell in late spring, which balanced the growth and development of the grapes. The high temperatures in the summer and fall extended the harvest until the end of May. All of these conditions produced ripe and healthy grapes that were harvested earlier than normal with good fruit character and excellent tannin maturation.

Production notes

The grapes were crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks for 7 days at 86ºF (30ºC) followed by a 6-day post-fermentation maceration. Once the malolactic fermentation was complete, each variety was aged separately in a special selection of barrels for 10 months for greater structure and complexity. After making the final blend, the wine was returned to the barrels for another 4 months to round out the blend and obtain an extraordinary and distinguished blend.

Tasting notes

Classic and elegant with aromas of red fruits, plums, and cherries intermingled with notes of tobacco and vanilla that lend tremendous complexity. Intense and well structured with ripe tannins. This is an enveloping wine with magnificent fruit expression reflected in its long, broad finish. Pair with aged cheeses, grilled red meats, pork, and well-seasoned dishes.

January 2022 (Vintage 2018)

This cuvée is from a selection of the vineyards that Santa Ema began planting near the slopes of Pirque, in the Andean foothills of Alto Maipo. The base is 72% cabernet sauvignon plus 22% carmenere, and the rest of cabernet franc, all vinified and aged separately for 10 months and then for another four in the same barrels after the blend was made. The greatest presence here, independent of the percentages, is the cabernet, which acquires the personality of the variety when grown in Pirque—the slightly mentholated and herbal aromas and the red fruits, but most of all, that web of fine, sharp tannins that protect the fresh and lively fruit flavors. A classic of the area and a wine with a deep sense of place, which for us is almost everything.

March 2023 (Vintage 2018)

This well-balanced Cabernet Sauvignon-based blend includes Carménère, and Cabernet Franc. It's elegant and has an aromatic nose of strawberry and blackberry jam with hints of bay leaf and baking spices. It offers a sweet entrance with vanilla and juicy red fruit flavors alongside hints of peppercorn and silky tannins. The finish is long and shows dried herbs.

May 2018

Carefully crafted, with elegance and equilibrium, yet still very youthful but with the acidity and spice that promises more to come.
