About this winery

Saxum is one of the hottest wineries in Paso Robles, which is saying something, since Paso is pretty well as hot as it gets in California these days. Of course Paso is 'hot' by virtue of being cool, and the coolest part of Paso Robles is the Templeton gap in West Paso, where Saxum is located. Here cool marine air streams in from the Pacific Ocean, creating a microclimate that is surprisingly temperate for Southern California. Saxum's James Berry vineyard is perhaps the supreme expression of...

September 2021

Pure perfection in a glass, the 2019 G2 Vineyard checks in as 53% Grenache, 21% Mourvèdre, 19% Graciano, and the rest Carignan and Syrah. An incredible array of blackberries, ground pepper, violets, and herbes de Provence all emerge from the glass, and it’s full-bodied, deep, and concentrated, yet as weightless as they come. It shows more gamey, exotic notes with time in the glass, it’s perfectly balanced, and it’s just an incredible wine from this reference point estate. Drink bottles any time over the coming 10-15 years.

August 2023 (Vintage 2021)

Saxum has been working with the G2 vineyard since 2014, and this Grenache-dominant 2021 embodies the phrase ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’, in its restraint combined with power. Dark cherries on a shy nose, hints of cedar and toastiness. The palate is a well-integrated study on precision and interplay: dark currant and plum fruits, cinnamon, black pepper, completed by sweet oak spice.

August 2023 (Vintage 2021)

Not yet bottled but already incredibly impressive, the 2021 G2 will be Grenache-dominated but includes smaller amounts of Syrah and Graciano. It’s loaded with red and black raspberry-like fruits as well as tons of floral, pepper, and spicy nuances, which carry to a full-bodied, pure, elegant red. It’s remarkably complex for such a young wine and has incredible tannins and a gorgeous finish. Don’t miss it.
