About this winery

The history of the Varnier-Fannière estate dates back to 1860, when the Fannière family began growing grapes and selling them to the Champagne negociant houses. It was only in 1950 that the family started producing Champagne under their own name. In 1989 Denis Varnier took over the vineyards and the house we know today was born. Varnier-Fannière's vineyard holdings are tiny, just 4 hectares of exclusively Grand Cru vineyards in Avize, Oger, Oiry and Cramant. Annual production is 3000 cases...

Product notes

The "Grand Cru" vines used in the past are still being used today to produce this wine — they are all over 50 years of age. The sugar content is "Extra Brut" (only 3 g/l) and allows the wine to express the elegance and minerality of Avize, Oger and Cramant soils.

Production notes

This wine is dedicated to the grand-father, Jean FANNIÈRE, who had decided to stop selling his grapes in the 1950’s to produce his own Champagne. Made in the "old-fashioned way", this wine will be delivered to you in a white wooden case, just like Jean used to do it in the old days.

The NV Champagne Cuvée de Jean Fannière Origine Extra Brut is floral and pretty, with notes of fresh baked croissant, green apple, pear, and lime blossom. The palate seems to have more tension and feels more dry, with green apple skin, stony and chalky earth, and white flowers. It is still assertive in its style, but I think it has more refinement and finesse. Drink over the next 15 or so years.
