About this winery

Olivier Humbrecht is one of the world's most renowned winegrowers. He is a Master of Wine and has been described by Robert Parker as the greatest white winemaker on earth. Yet he is very soft spoken, humble, and self-deprecating, which makes him perfectly suited to his assumed role as a global ambassador of wine. Notes about product

The due south-facing aspect of Rangen Vineyard increases the amount of direct sunlight, giving the vines a privileged position on the steep Hillside with its 90% gradient. The respect for the vine and soil is very important for Olivier and is team of vineyard workers. All viticultural work is carried out by hand with the help of some horses to plough the vineyards with minimum impact of the soil. All vineyards have been certified organic and biodynamic since 2002.

Winemaking notes

All wines are fermented in traditional oak vats using native yeasts. No additives are used, and chaptalization is never carried out. The wines are left on their lees and ferment at there own pace, the wines are not fined. Very little sulfites are added and the wines are bottled after at least 18 months on the lees.

Tasting notes

This wine is a classic example of the intensity that the Rangen vineyard can produce. This wine develops deep aromatic notes of flint, smoke, minerals, with the more classic ripe white fruits. The mouthfeel is dense, full bodied with a long lasting and full of mineral flavors.

November 2019

A flinty note of reduction still hovers above the nose of this wine. Concentrated and energetic, the drive is full of drive and urgency. The midpalate is all about phenolic structure and a tone reminiscent of apple pip and almond skin. The finish is dry and intense. More will be revealed from this still-disclosing aromatic canvas.

October 2018

Tasted from the sulfured vat in late October 2018, the pure and flinty 2017 Alsace Grand Cru Rangen de Thann Pinot Gris Clos Saint Urbain is rich, intense and dense in its texture. It is a powerful but balanced Pinot with fine tannins. Not really smooth but harmonious and elegant.
