About this winery

Olivier Humbrecht is one of the world's most renowned winegrowers. He is a Master of Wine and has been described by Robert Parker as the greatest white winemaker on earth. Yet he is very soft spoken, humble, and self-deprecating, which makes him perfectly suited to his assumed role as a global ambassador of wine. He is a champion of terroir, biodynamic farming principles, and non-interventionist winemaking, whose family have been winegrowers in Alsace for 12 generations (since 1620). He is...

Product notes

The vineyards producing this Riesling are located on the sandy/gravelly part of the Herrenweg area in Turckheim. This valley floor was shaped by glaciers and rivers in the quaternary era. The layers of large pebbles can be over 45m deep (we could see this when digging for our well at the winery!). These soils may suffer a lot in very dry vintages, but in more rainy vintages, they remind us how important it is to have great drainage. This valley floor also enjoys early ripening conditions, particularly interesting in 2024. The early harvest and an excellent soil metabolism ensured a fast and dynamic fermentation leading to a bone-dry wine with a great structure.

Tasting notes

The nose, as expected, is still slightly closed but a gentle aeration will reveal complex fruity and floral aromas (citrus, lime tree…). The palate shows serious structure, driven by a ripe tight acidity in a delicate lacy texture with moderate power. This Riesling represents the archetype of the grape variety and is so enjoyable today.

December 2016 (Vintage 2015)

A solid riesling with sliced-apple and lime aromas and flavors. Cement and stone undertones. Pretty, phenolic texture. Medium to full body, a bone-dry palate and a gorgeous finish. Rich and flavorful yet only 11.5% alcohol. Don't miss this. Biodynamically grown grapes all from around the winery in Turckheim.

April 2018 (Vintage 2016)

Bright straw. Very floral, intensely aromatic Riesling nose with hints of lemon verbena and jasmine plus fresh citrus fruit. Then very pure and clean, offering juicy orchard fruit and powdered stone elements. An enticing easy-to-drink quality makes this wine go down like water. Finishes long and mineral. Made from roughly 20- to 30-year-old vines (the oldest ones are actually 50 to 60 years old and grow in the high-quality Herrenweg lieu-dit)...Lovely entry-level wine.

February 2017 (Vintage 2015)

A limey nose introduces a really juicy lemon and tangerine palate, with a hint of zest and pith on the mid-palate. Incredibly pure fruit expression with a good length, this is a great introduction to Alsatian Riesling.

August 2017 (Vintage 2015)

A fresh, crowd-pleasing white, with floral and fresh herb accents to the flavors of nectarine, guava, stone and spice. A light- to medium-bodied Riesling that's broad and creamy, backed by a firm frame of crunchy acidity.
