Jim Binns is a family man who makes incredible Rhone valley inspired wines from some of the best vineyards in Santa Barabra County and San Luis Obispo. Andremily is named after his son and daughter, Andrew and Emily. The ladder on the logo is an homage to his wife’s maternal grandfather who endured some incredible challenges throughout his life, but through determination and hard work built a successful gardening business and taught his family the virtues of hard work and education. The ladder also happens to show an A for Andremily. In Jim’s words “It is a reminder to us that while the road may not always be smooth, if one is already committed to working hard, the bumps certainly become a bit less noticeable.” Jim made his first wine under the Andremily name during his time at Sine Qua Non with Manfred and Elaine Krankl. As the Krankl’s expanded their estate vineyard holdings, they did not need as many leased vineyards. Instead of giving up the lease to some incredible vineyards, in this case the White Hawk vineyard in Cat Canyon in Santa Barbara County, they offered it to Jim. Jim took over the lease and released the first vintage of Andremily, No.1 2012. A Syrah dominated wine with Viognier (co-fermented with the Syrah) and Mourvèdre. The first vintage immediately got the attention of wine writers. Jeb Dunnuck called it “..about as good a first release as you're likely to find anywhere in the wine world today.” Jim had no intention of leaving his role at Sine Qua Non and planned to stay there as long as possible, but the demands on him for Andremily grew to a point where he could no longer give his best to Sine Qua Non and Andremily. He left Sine Qua Non in 2017. Jim sources fruit from his Slide Hill estate vineyard in Edna Valley, as well as from Alta Mesa Vineyard in the Cuyama Valley of Santa Barbara County and Larner vineyard in Ballard Canyon, also in Santa Barbara County. Jim also still sources from 2 plots in the White Hawk vineyard. Andremily wines are intentionally labelled as California AVA instead of a more specific AVA. He prefers to let the wines speak for themselves and not be judged based on the AVA on the label.

Wine Advocate

In May 2019, I paid a visit to Andremily owner, Jim Binns, at his small winemaking facility in Ventura, CA. A former employee at Sine Qua Non, not only did this guy learn from the best, he has taken the baton and run off into his own very clever direction with it. I think it is safe to say that with the possible exception of Beaucastel’s Hommage a Jacques Perrin, there is no one in the world producing greater Mourvedre than Jim. It is a variety that he clearly loves and has mastered like no other.

Jim Binns presented a stellar set of 2021s and 2020s. In 2020, Binns acquired Slide Hill (formerly Sawyer-Lindquist), one of the best-known sites in Edna Valley. As good as the wines have been here in the past, my distinct impression is that the move towards becoming an estate winery is having a profound impact on the wines. I see more nuance and delineation than in the early years. Those qualities work well in rounding out wines that have always been built on textural opulence.
