About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

Notes about product

The Adrianna Vineyard is located at almost 5,000 feet elevation in Mendoza. The soils in this 1.4 hectare parcel are filled with scattered limestone and marine deposits that covered the region millions of years ago. The limestone layers are well-drained and particularly rich in rhizobacteria, the microorganisms that help vine roots withstand stress and absorb nutrients. Thus, the name "mundus bacillus terrae" or "elegant microbes of the earth".

Production notes

Fermented in 225 liter oak barrels and 500 liter French oak roll-fermenters for 16 days at temperatures between 25-30┬░ C; 8-13 days maceration. Aged 24 months in French oak.

Tasting notes

This rich wine offers an explosive and acidic palette of red berries, red plums, and a slight taste of wood grain. Its aroma pairs perfectly with the taste, and smells of fresh berries and maple. The tannin in the wine combined with the red berries offers a highly acidic finish.

April 2016

This ambitious new release from Catena (US$300 a bottle, no less) is a radical departure for the winery that shows the left field thinking of winemaker Ale Vigil. Old wood, 50% whole bunches and partial carbonic maceration all contribute to the complexity of this remarkable Malbec, sourced from the same chalky soils as White Bones Chardonnay. Fresh and sappy with aromatic red fruits and notes of clove, pepper spice and bramble and a lingering finish.

June 2017

A generous and fruity wine with phenomenal depth and character. Full body, layered and beautiful with such gorgeous fruit character of berry, floral and hints of cream. Tangy and vivid. Hints of tangerine and stone in the aftertaste. Drink now but a wine to last for years. Made from organically grown grapes.
