About this winery

At heart, Catena is a story about family. Family who poured their lives, passion and spirit into transforming scrub-laden desert into some of the most beautiful and unique vineyards in the world. Family that passed their knowledge from generation to generation, blending collective memory with state-of-the-art science from the new world of viticulture. Family who, through risk-taking, faith and a little luck, transformed their treasured Mendoza terroir into the fountainhead of the award-winning...

Notes about product

Fortuna Terrae means "luck of the land" in Latin. Fortuna Terrae sits on 5 hectares of deep, loamy soil at an altitude of 4482 ft (1366 m) and is home to many varieties of native grasses which prevent erosion and attract beneficial insects, singing birds and mountain foxes.

Winemaking notes

Fermented in 225 liter oak barrels and 500 liter French oak roll-fermenters for 16 days at a temperature of 25-30┬░ C. Aged 24 months in French oak.

Tasting notes

An elegant and aromatic wine showcasing black fruit and spice, with moderate acidity, round mouthfeel and a smooth finish.

April 2018

Very complex aromas of blueberries and blackberries with hints of cheese and wet earth. Hot stones, too. Full-bodied, dense and layered with lots of firm yet polished tannins and a gorgeous finish. Succulent. So delicious. You'll want to drink this now! But better in 2020.

October 2019

Well-crafted and pure-tasting, with intense, mineral-infused flavors of raspberry, red currant and dried cherry, supported by fresh acidity. The lively finish reverberates with crushed stone and spice notes.

June 2018

Like many other 2015s, there is a little more ripeness in the 2015 Adrianna Vineyard Fortuna Terrae, and the year is more marked and more noticeable in this bottling. It's juicy, floral, expressive and more gentle within the serious and austere profile the place provides. 6,600 bottles were filled in July 2017.

May 2018

The third vintage of this elegant, spicy, 80% whole bunch-fermented Malbec, made in
more of a “European” style than many of the top Catena reds, is every bit as good as its
predecessors. Fresh, tangy and peppery, with skilfully integrated 50% new oak, crunchy red berry fruit and a fine, refreshing finish.

July 2018

(14.5% alcohol; here the layer of calcaire lies underneath a meter of soil): Bright medium ruby. Aromas of black cherry, licorice, bitter chocolate and violet are currently showing a bit more oak influence than the River Stones Malbec. Denser on the palate than that wine as well, conveying a greater impression of power leavened by superb mineral energy. This wine always begins with about 1.5 grams per liter more acidity than the River Stones, noted winemaker Alejandro Vigil, despite the fact that in 2015 one of the components was picked with potential alcohol of 15.5%. Boasts an exhilarating balance of sweetness and acidity. Although the tannins are beautifully buffered, this wine will need aging to unfold.
