Descending from an old French family that is established in the Netherlands since the 19th century, (where the V became a W) Joost and Miguela de Willebois are passionate about French culture, the medieval period and the Loire Valley. With their four sons, they have settled in Touraine since 1996 where they fell in love with the Loire Sauvignon Blanc. After successful professional careers spanning the globe, they now devote themselves fully to the expansion of J. de Villebois from their family home in the Touraine. In 2004 Joost met Thierry Merlet, an experienced winemaker in Touraine and they connected over their passion for Sauvignon Blanc. Soon after, Thierry joined Joost and J. de Villebois was born. Joost acquired 10 ha of property in Mareuil sur Cher and the first Sauvignon de Loire was released within two years. Their purpose was to become specialists of Sauvignon Blanc in the Loire Valley. One single variety, multi-appellations with a focus on Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé. By 2010, the wines were receiving awards from French and International competitions. Joost then set about purchasing new vineyards to keep up with demand and in 2015 J. de Villebois acquired Domaine Fournier Père et Fils. More vineyards were purchased in Touraine in 2019. The quest at J. de Villebois is to create the best Sauvignon Blanc through innovation and experimentation while embracing and respecting the values and spirit of the Loire appellations. The spirit of Villebois is the ability to combine the most modern techniques with the noblest soils, only to question everything the following year. Sustainability is very important at J. de Villebois. The winery holds the highest level, a level 3 High Environmental Value certificate for biodiversity conservation, managed fertilizer use, plant protection strategy and water resource management. They are also certified by the Vignerons en Développement Durable (Winegrowers in Sustainable Development). There are 12 sustainable commitments that must be met to receive the certificate that cover all stages of production, from the first leaves on the vine to the last drop of wine.
