This is one of those Pinot Noirs that I would love to discretely smuggle into a lineup of Burgundy wines to see if professionals can spot the difference, because I for one wager that I probably could not. This is not suggesting the Hamilton-Russell are mimicking Burgundy, rather a testament to the quality of their wines. That includes their exemplary Chardonnay. Both effortlessly straddle Old World and New World, thanks to both the microclimate and terroir of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley and the talent in the winery.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one of South Africa’s iconic wine estates. Located in the relatively cool, maritime-influenced Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, close to the old fishing village of Hermanus, it is one of the leading producers of Burgundian-styled wines in the Southern Hemisphere.
The 2020 vintage was the estate’s 40th. Since taking over in 1994, Anthony Hamilton Russell and wife Olive have propelled their wine farm into the top echelons, as a source of exemplary Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

"Outside Burgundy, Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one of the leading producers of cooler-climate Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Situated in the strongly maritime influenced and beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, this is one of South Africa’s most southerly wineries and one which continues to adapt and evolve."
Andy Howard MW, Avril 2022

Hamilton Russell Vineyards is one of South Africa’s most distinctive cool-climate estates, covering 172 hectares of striking property just inland from Walker Bay, with 52 hectares planted to vines on ancient, low-vigor soils. The maritime climate defines the style, with some vineyards planted just 1,500 meters from the cold Atlantic Ocean, imparting the chiseled tension and natural freshness that are hallmarks of the wines. The estate produces only two wines, a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, allowing the Hemel-en-Aarde terroir to speak with clarity.
