Vinous on CIRILLO ESTATE WINES
|
|
The small Cirillo Estate, run by winemaker Marco Cirillo and his wife Annika Lehmann, was one of the first modern wineries in Barossa to truly focus on Grenache. In the 1970s, the Cirillo family purchased their Light Pass vineyard, planted in 1848 with Grenache and Sémillon. The vineyard survived the relatively recent decimation of Barossa Grenache stocks, no doubt in part due to its exceptional location on sandy soils, proving to be the best suited to Grenache in Barossa. After selling their fruit to wineries such as Rockford and Torbreck for decades, Marco Cirillo took over, and the estate was born. Today it remains home to unique Barossan expressions and excellent value, particularly among the entry-level wines.

The 2022 The Vincent Survivor Vine Grenache is plush and fine at once. The febrile tannins that shape the fruit are very fine—pliability and ductility are the story. It has notes of graphite, black tea, strawberry, raspberry seed, exotic spice and black cherry. This is a beauty, and it really overdelivers for the price point ($25A UD!). Twenty percent of the wine goes into old oak. It's enough to support the tannins, but not enough to feel overtly oaky. Lovely, this comes from 1906 and 1901 plantings of Grenache, on spur-pruned trellis. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

Vinous, June 2023
This 2016 Grenache 1850 Ancestor Vine is crafted off the oldest Grenache vineyard in Australia, planted before 1850. The 2016 vintage offers up an ethereal experience radiating with dark cherry, roasted meats, bacon fat and soy sauce aromas and a fine dusting of crushed spices. There is lovely texture and approachability to the wine, although it also remains bound up. In the glass, more meaty, spicy, fennel and coriander seed flavors slowly rise up over fine yet firm tannins - the overall experience is quite seamless. Still young and tightly wound, despite its age, its combination of excellent balance and a long, sustained finish showcases a benchmark Barossan Grenache that will age very well.

The tasting of this 2019 Ancestor Vine Semillon is good because the last time I saw it was from tank. Today, the nose leads with lemongrass and lime zest, lemon oil and green leaf/cilantro. In the mouth, the wine is taut and littered with hay/straw. It's open-weave and spicy, a beauty. It was bottled unfiltered and is clear in the glass. The vineyard here was planted in 1848, and the vines are still producing today. It's a very impressive and humbling experience to walk among those old vines. 10.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
