Tim Atkin MW on CATENA
|

“Bodega Catena Zapata is a driving force in Argentine winemaking. A winery that played a pivotal role in resurrecting Malbec's fortunes, pushing Mendoza's vineyards higher into the Andean foothills, and delving deeply into the country's many terroirs. The family even founded the Catena Institute of Wine to scientifically examine every aspect of the local soils, rocks and microorganisms and their effect on the vines.”

Catena's Appellation Wines
Catena's appellation wines are akin to Burgundy's village wines. Like their French counterparts, the towns lend their names to the historic vineyards that surround them and represent a distinct sub-region in the Mendoza province.

Lujan de Cuyo (950 m/3117 ft)
The Luján de Cuyo appellation is known for its clay-rich soils and cool nights. Deeply aromatic with expressive citrus and peach with a rich and mineral finish. This blend of Semillon and Chenin Blanc is Argentina’s century-old traditional white wine.

San Carlos (1090 m/3576 ft)
The sandy-loam soils and mountainous climate yield a wine with concentrated ripe red berries, a touch of eucalyptus and black pepper, robust tannins and smooth lengthy finish.

James Suckling, April 2021
Dark berries, such as blackberries, with hints of lemon grass and violets on the nose, following through to a medium body with fine tannins and a fresh, bright finish. Pretty balance to this. Supple.

Vista Flores (1100 m/3608 ft)
In the 1950's, Don Domingo Catena began sourcing Malbec from the historic vineyards of Vista Flores. Domingo prized the region's Malbec for its dark colour and structured tannins.

Wine Advocate, November 2022
Now there's also a 2021 Appellation Vista Flores Malbec from the collection of IG wines. It was produced with grapes from loamy soils with rounded stones at 1,100 meters above sea level. It fermented in stainless steel and matured in French oak barrels, 35% of them new, for 12 months. It has moderate 13.7% alcohol and very good acidity and freshness, reflecting a cool vintage, with varietal notes of violets, berries and herbs and a medium-bodied palate with fine tannins.
