Jeb Dunnuck on JL CHAVE SELECTION

The négociant arm of Jean-Louis Chave continues to deliver a solid lineup of wines that are impeccably made and always represent terrific values. From the entry-level Mon Coeur to the Hermitage Farconnet, the wines punch above their weight and consistently offer character as well as real regional identity. They're go-to bottles for readers looking for value, consistency, and authenticity across the Northern Rhône. I've drunk my fair share.

Classic granite notes of cassis and darker cherries, graphite, crushed stone, pepper, and violets all emerge from the 2023 Saint Joseph Offerus. Medium-bodied, focused, and beautifully balanced on the palate, with textbook Saint Joseph tannins, nicely integrated acidity, and a crisp, mineral-laced finish, it will evolve nicely over the coming 8-10 years. Drink 2025-2035.

Brought up in used barrels, the 2021 Hermitage Farconnet reveals redcurrants, leather, flowers, and spice, with classic Hermitage minerality. Medium-bodied and nicely balanced on the palate, with fine tannins and solid depth, it shows the more mid-weight style of the vintage yet remains balanced and has solid depth and ripe tannins, all making for a classic, complete Hermitage with plenty to love. It will drink nicely for a decade or longer if well stored. Drink 2025-2035.

Leading off the reds, the 2023 Crozes-Hermitage Silene reveals a terrific bouquet of red and black fruits, gamy herbs, violets, and pepper. Medium-bodied, juicy, and nicely textured on the palate, it has solid minerality and a darker, earthy, granitic character that almost reminds me of a Saint Joseph. This rock-solid effort will drink nicely for 7-8 years.
