MATHIEU & CAMILLE LAPIERRE
Morgon Cuvée Marcel Lapierre 2022

Beaujolais, France

Decanter, May 2024

The aromas here are dense with plum, fig, ripe mulberry and hints of earth, menthol, spice and smoke. Impressive density and weight on the palate lead the wine to a lingering finish. Eminently ageworthy, this has the most concentration and depth of the range. Labelled MMXXII, the cuvée is produced with grapes from the domaine's oldest vines (more than a century old) in the climats of Côte de Py and Douby, given a maceration of up to 36 days and nine months ageing in used casks.

Vinous, March 2024

This bottle of 2023 Morgon comes from the first bottling run completed in March 2024 (there will be five bottlings until September). Lapierre told me that this is destined for markets in Japan, Canada and a little for the US. The nose reveals dark berry fruit, sous-bois and light Indian ink aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and crisp acidity, a little rustic in a good way with a slightly savory finish. Lovely.

Jeb Dunnuck, December 2024

A bright pink color, the NV Champagne Grand Cru Brut Rose is 80% Pinot Noir (8% of which is vin rouge) and reveals notes of poppy red pomegranate berries, clementine, crushed chalky earth, and powder. Zesty and medium-bodied, it has good intensity and a dry feel, with a lively mousse and a rather long finish. It’s going to drink well over the coming 6-8 years.

Wine Spectator, November 2020

A lush, creamy style enlivened by a spine of mouthwatering acidity, this offers a finely knit range of fresh bread dough, crème de cassis, star anise and candied ginger flavors. The finish is clean-cut and lingering, echoing a rich tang of salted almond.

GIANNI BRUNELLI

Decanter, November 2022

As with the 2017 vintage, Laura Brunelli will not be releasing a Riserva. Instead, the Olmo vineyard which typically forms the backbone of the latter is an important component in this annata Brunello, making for a lovely and complete wine. Mint, lavender and fennel lead on the nose while sweet, succulent persimmon and crunchy pomegranate provide the backdrop on the palate, and the chalky tannins are rather sneaky in their grasp. There's a superficial accessibility, but substance, intrigue and backbone suggest even more to come.

Vibrant red, the 2022 Rosso Di Montalcino takes on aromas of grenadine, apricot, tangerine, and pressed flowers. This medium-bodied Rosso remains pure and focused, with lovely balance in its fruit. It has fine tannins and is graceful, with a refined texture on the palate. Harmonious in its feel, it is fantastically balanced and is going to have a wide drinking window over the coming 10 years.

Jeb Dunnuck, July 2025

Blending 100% Tempranillo from nine different villages in the province of Burgos and Valladolid, where the vines are from 40 to 80 years old, the 2022 is red fruit forward, juicy, and well-concentrated. French and American oak are used for aging 16 months after fermentation in stainless steel. With bright acidity providing energy to the length of creamy tannins and full-bodied intensity, this wine is built for approachability in its youth. Nonetheless, I see it aging well 10-15 years more.
