Wine Advocate on DOMAINE DE LA MORDORÉE

Titre

"I’ve yet to see these guys put a foot wrong, and regardless of the vintage, they’re able to make superb wines. In addition to their terrific Châteauneuf du Papes, they continue to raise the quality of their Lirac and Côtes du Rhône releases. Also, while these all have the ability to drink nicely on release, they age beautifully."

What a beautifully ripe mulberry aroma this Chateauneuf has! An imposing but stunningly fine tannin structure neatly supports the richness and concentration on the full-bodied palate. Very long, creamy and dry finish with a pronounced licorice note that pulls you inexorably back for more. A complex blend based on grenache. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.

There's a touch of oak on the nose and palate that helps to frame the tangy citrus notes, and lends a touch of spice, but it's far from overwhelming. Full-bodied, classically Lirac in its breadth on the palate. Ends on a nip of grapefruit bitterness. Good acidity.

Deep red colour with aromas of blackcurrant, cherry, red fruits and violet. The palate is fresh with soft tannins and a nice length.

The full ripe-blackberry fruit on the full-bodied palate is underlined by healthy tannins, that put this firmly on the dry side and give it a classical style, in spite of the ample (15%) alcohol. Very interesting licorice and bark notes at the finish. And somehow all this has a certain refreshing quality. A cuvee of grenache and syrah. From biodynamically grown grapes with Demeter certification.

Rounded, medium- to full-bodied style, the oak is well-judged and adds a little polish to the fruit. Good length and depth, ripe, with gently warming alcohol. Succulent and fresh, this is very enjoyable. Serious for a Lirac!
