Wine Advocate on PEDRO PARRA Y FAMILIA

Titre

It should come as no surprise that one of the world's leading terroir experts, possessing deep knowledge of the world's finest regions and, within them, its most iconic vineyards, would also produce compelling, transparent wines that faithfully reflect their origins. This is undeniably the case with Pedro Parra. Since establishing his label in 2014, he has steadily developed an impeccable portfolio that holds up a mirror to Itata and reflects it directly into the glass. A tasting through this roster is a masterclass in transparency, attention to detail and ceaseless dedication to quality above all else.

Hailing from complex soils defined by a mixture of iron, quartz, sand and silt, the 2022 Trane is the most aromatically spectacular wine in the Parra lineup, opening with an alluring, complex perfume of licorice, orange peels, roses and dark fruits. Similarly, the palate is the most sumptuous and concentrated, ratcheting up the density and saturation while sacrificing none of the silky precision that defines the house style. This power is echoed on the finish with an expansive, sweet intensity that swells in lockstep with a simmering mineral undercurrent, concluding with a retronasal perfume first observed on the nose. This is certainly the flashiest, most seductive wine in the stable, and I suspect it will evolve beautifully in the cellar.

The 2022 Monk originates from dark red granite soils with high silt and iron content, contributing to its dark, introverted personality. Despite this brooding start, it slowly unfurls in the glass with anise, cardamom and hints of dark fruit, although fruits generally are not in the foreground of any wine in this roster. In the mouth, it offers the deepest and most muscular palate while maintaining a seamless, slender texture, concluding with a powdery, glacial finish of drying mineral intensity. Within the Parra roster, this is one wine I would recommend cellaring for an additional year or two.

The 2022 Hub comes from 40-year-old vines in a high-elevation plot in Guarilihue, located on shallow red granite soils containing a balanced proportion of iron and sand. It opens with a deep, transparent perfume that continually generates additional lift and dimension the longer it remains in the glass. The palate is the quintessence of ethereal, featuring a racy, floating texture that gently grips before fully releasing into a mineral-drenched, layered, refined finish that endlessly regenerates chalky intensity. The purity and power held in the structure of this wine are captivating, and there is no need to cellar it further—although I do not doubt it will develop beautifully over the coming decade.

The 2022 Imaginador collects the fruit that doesn't go into the five single-vineyard bottlings and presents them with the clarity and precision many producers strive for in their top cuvées. It leads with a spice-driven nose, adding flourishes of dried flowers and smoke with time. The palate embodies the weightlessly saturated profile that defines the entire portfolio, concluding with ultra-refined tannins and stony persistence. This is a superb introduction to a world-class set of wines.
