Vinous on POGGERINO

Titre

I was once again quite taken with the wines Poggerino. Piero and Benedetta Lanza's small estate is located in Radda. Vineyards are farmed organically, while the wines are made in a style that really speaks to place. These are some of the most distinctive, personal wines readers will come across.

Planted in 1984, Bugialla is a 4ha plot at 500 metres on stony Galestro soil. Owner Piero Lanza picks the larger bunches first for the Chianti Classico and leaves the smaller bunches to ripen longer for the Riserva. Just bottled, the 2019 is shy but with coaxing, aromas of herbs and lavender emerge. Tight on the entry, it expands with a soft ripeness of charming brambly fruit, succulent with compact chalky tannins. Intricately textured and long.

Decanter, February 2023

Abutting the Albola estate, which it was once part of, Poggerino counts 12.5 hectares within the UGA of Radda. While the wines exhibit the elegance and succulence of the zone, they have a denser, darker expression than some of their peers. The 2021 clearly demonstrates this concentration while remaining pure and fresh. It is replete with spicy wild woodland berries hemmed in by terracotta-like tannins. Textured and layered with substance and structure, it merits a few years in the cellar.
