Sokol Blosser's Newest Vineyard, Kalita

Kalita Vineyard is Sokol Blosser’s first vineyard purchase since 2008, but more importantly their first vineyard purchase outside the Dundee Hills. Located in the heart of the Yamhill-Carlton AVA in the Willamette Valley, it is a stunner – the vineyard and the wine.

Situated 525 to 750 feet above sea level, this 22 acre site is in the shape of a bowl with vines facing south, southwest and southeast. While the soils of the Dundee Hills are volcanic, Yamhill-Carlton is characterized by marine sediment resulting in a Pinot Noir that exhibits more dark fruit, rather than the classic Dundee Hills red fruit note, and grippier tannins. Delicious and age-worthy!

Decanter, March 2024

There is a pungent intensity to the 2022 Kalita Vineyard Pinot Noir that is evocative of umami richness and flinty gunpowder mineral depth. Scents of forest floor, turned earth and pine tar frame notes of ripe bramble fruit. The palate has ripeness and the classic structure one associates with the Yamhill-Carlton AVA. Black cherries, red plum skin and a note of clove and smoke cross the palate, delivering a stony component to the finish.

Brilliant garnet. Sexy, high-pitched red fruit and floral scents are complemented by building allspice and mineral flourishes. Juicy and penetrating on the palate, showing excellent clarity to the appealingly sweet raspberry, cherry and rose pastille flavors. A bracing suggestion of blood orange adds cut to a very long, penetrating finish framed by silky, even tannins.

Vinous, August 2020

Deep, shimmering red. Spice-accented raspberry and cherry aromas are complemented by hints of cola and musky flowers. Silky and focused on the palate, offering gently sweet red fruit, floral pastille and spicecake flavors that flesh out as the wine opens up. Fine-grained tannins lend shape to a very long, spice-accented finish that shows sharp clarity and building florality.
