Catena's Adrianna Vineyard
Nicolas Catena was called crazy and told that the fruit would never ripen when he planted at an altitude of 1450m/4757ft in a quest to make fresher more structured wines. Undeterred he planted anyway.
Today, these wines from the Adrianna Vineyard are some of the freshest, most structured and balanced in all of Argentina.
The Adrianna vineyard is like owning an entire village in Burgundy and the small block wines below are the Catenas' attempt to find their Grand Crus. While we have used Burgundy as a reference to the Catenas' quest to divine the distinctiveness of these small blocks of terroir we shouldn’t lose site of the fact that the terroir here is the sum of all its parts: Altitude, intense sun, complex soils, complex microbial life -- and that these conditions result in wines that are distinctly Argentine.
The scale of excellence here is astounding. Enjoy!

James Suckling, April 2021
Blackberries with some black tea and perfumes. Full-bodied with fine, dusty tannins and seamless texture. So long and consistent. 60% whole cluster fermentation with 14 months in oak casks. Glorious, tactile wine.

James Suckling, February 2022
Fascinating nose of white lavender, lemon, pineapple, green apple, thyme, rosemary, sourdough, almond and oyster shell. It’s medium-bodied with vibrant acidity and a tense, spicy palate. So much flavor and fragrance. Incredibly expressive, with evolving layers of fresh fruit, spices, flowers and herbs.

Vinous, August 2022
The 2020 Chardonnay Adrianna Vineyard White Stones from Gualtallary, Uco Valley, was barrel-aged for 16 months. Greenish-yellow in the glass. The intense, layered nose presents bold aromas of green apple, pear, hints of linden blossom and ginger with touches of lemon and herbs. In the mouth, it’s concentrated, rooted in a lively, heightened freshness while maintaining the variety’s expansive flow, which also delivers salinity and long-lasting flavor. A thrilling white that defines this nook of the Uco Valley.
