Terry Theise on ALZINGER
|
|
Among the great names in the Wachau, Alzinger stands somewhat alone. I’d describe the wines as breathy, by which I mean an evanescent quality that I receive as tenderness, which in turn belongs to wines that don’t “attack” with flavor, but which are enveloping and allusive. Such wines can offer remarkable power and expressiveness – think Raveneau or Dönnhoff – but they do not grip so much as caress. In their wake they leave a kind of haunting tingle, which you then attempt to reconcile with the profound information they convey. At least I try to do that, and then I fail. Reams of words later, I’m still not sure I’ve grabbed it, but maybe that’s as it should be; wines which themselves don’t grab the palate are fiends to try to grab in prose.

The 2022 Riesling Dürnsteiner Federspiel was picked from various smaller parcels on the foot of the Loibenberg, including terraces of Loibenberg and Burgstall. Exquisitely pure bergamot notes are fragrant and enticing on the nose. The palate is chiseled, fine and taut, with a slightly riper note of citrus that reminds of Meyer lemon, yet still with the fragrant green citrus frisson. This is a bright, pure wine of exquisite slenderness and citrus fragrance. (Bone-dry)

James Suckling, September 2023
Fragrant nose of dried herb, white pepper, jackfruit and yellow kiwi fruit. It’s sleek and creamy, full-bodied, but with a lovely coolness. Exotic fruit and herb character but not rich or overpowering.

Vinous, November 2023
The 2022 Grüner Veltliner Steinertal Smaragd is the easternmost terraced single-site of the Wachau, on the border to Kremstal and its Pfaffenberg. While this is at the warmer end of the Wachau, two gullies bring down cold air from the forested top and create a high day-night amplitude. Peppery fern and green pear skin have a creamy, salty aspect on the subtle nose. The palate tingles with pepper on a very fine, taut, bright body that is both slender and stony. Grüner's creaminess washes over like surf over immovable rocks. This is a statuesque, smooth, taut wine, with a haunting pepperiness on the finish. (Bone-dry)

James Suckling, September 2023
White grapefruit aromas greet you first, followed by lemongrass, green papayas, anise and flint stones. Mineral and driven, a little austere for now, with a medium body and tight, linear structure. Very precise. This has a long way to go.
